Skate Skiing warm up/down (Royal Gorge) 30:00 [1] 2.0 km (15:00 / km)

Ski Orienteering race (Royal Gorge) 1:28:00 [5] *** 21.0 km (4:11 / km)

Mid-20s and snowing initially, then the blizzard came.

This was really a cross-country race with a few stops along the way. Very few navigation variations were presented.

Took a little detour on #1, then everything went okay. Missed a better route choice that cost a substantial amount of climbing on one, and perhaps a few meters on a second.

Control pickup in the blizzard. The official word is that the groomer stops grooming when there are people on the trails, so that's usually 11AM. The bad part is that another 5 inches of heavy, wet snow fell after that.

Picked up a few controls and classic track signs that were used during the race. I'm glad I didn't go any further since the skate skiing wasn't much fun.

Skate Skiing (Auburn XC / Boreal Ridge) 1:00:00 [3] 7.5 km (8:00 / km)
shoes: Salomon 9.1 Skate 1999?

Sun & clouds, high 20's. Skied around the trails at Auburn XC / Boreal Ridge. We'll be racing here on Sunday, and the embargo doesn't start until Saturday.
The groomer had just finished packing 15-20 inches of new snow, and did a great job. This place is connected to Boreal Ridge downhill, and apparently they share equipment. Not all of the trails were groomed, but most were, and they were well-packed.

Looked at the trails a bit closer with regard to the o' map.

Skate Skiing warm up/down (Tahoe XC) 45:00 [1] 3.0 km (15:00 / km)

Skied around waiting for the start

Ski Orienteering race (Tahoe XC) 1:34:00 [4] *** 20.0 km (4:42 / km)

Second race in the Sierra Ski-O series, at Tahoe XC on the southwestern side of Lake Tahoe. 28 degrees and sunny/cloudy/windy/snowy. Got out before the storm came in. The wind was howling towards the end, with alot of blowing snow.

Found all the controls okay. One was misplaced by a substantial distance, and had trouble finding the second-to-last one due to inaccurate trail information on the map. Skis were generally slow, except when I skied through sunny areas (which were very rare).

Ski Orienteering warm up/down (Tahoe Donner) 1:00:00 [2] 3.0 km (20:00 / km)
shoes: Salomon 9.1 Skate 1999?

20 degrees and sun! 24" of snow overnight caused some issues with classic-only trails being non-existent. Helped to add about 6 or 7 shortcuts on one area of the map.

spiked:12/13c shoes: Salomon 9.1 Skate 1999?

First time racing at this altitude (6500 feet). Skied conservatively. Made a few poor route choices. Felt slow. Skis were okay.

Waited around after lunch to help with flag pickup. I also detoured to one of the scenic overlooks. I couldn't go uphill very fast. Legs were sore and lungs were lacking.

Skate Skiing (Royal Gorge) 1:10:00 [3] 10.0 km (7:00 / km)
shoes: Salomon 9.1 Skate 1999?

Went to Royal Gorge around 11 to ensure plenty of time to groom whatever snow fell overnight. It was snowing when we arrived, and didn't let up the entire time we were there. Skied in areas that were groomed recently, but there was still 4-6 inches of new snow. The trails were soft, but nice and wide initially.

shoes: Salomon 9.1 Skate 1999?

After a nice lunch, found out that the groomer was put away at 11:30AM. Went back out to find 6-10 inches of new snow on most trails, and most people were doing classic. Followed a snowmobile track for a while in order to avoid the deep stuff. Three of us skied a 200 meter loop, but it kept filling back in with new snow.
