Kangasala-Jukola, 3rd leg (13,1km)

Started around 3.30 after sleeping 45mins after Venlas. Wasn't too tired though!

Messed up everything with 1. Took a wrong path, corrected quite okay and then missed the depression just before the road I was aiming to find. Felt quite confident approaching the control and then got confused when I found a control not mine. A lot of people around looking for mine, they kept going left and lower, I felt it was wrong but not confident enough to not follow them. Finally came back to the original control and finally realised where there was a cliff and a big boulder together on the map -> where mine should be then. I had the right feeling from the beginning, it was exactly at the level I thought, shouldve just continued further right..

2, 3, 4 & 5 no problems, pretty much following tracks.

After 5 just before 6 I was running down a hill on a track with small trees fallen over the track. Got over some of them but then tripped and faceplanted. Otherwise okay but banged my knee on something quite bad. Took my time lying down trying to gather myself (no one saw me!) and then sat down. Hurt pretty bad and considered if I can even continue.. Leg seemed to hold so started to walk. There would've been a first aid tent almost next to me but decided not to stop - I was afraid I wouldnt continue if I stopped.

My going was pretty slow and was worried how long the whole course would take me wobbling along. Probably because of that and because focusing on the pain messed up the long leg 7-8. Had a clear plan to go left of the line but not too wide. Small mess up after the open field - continued to far on the field but corrected quickly, just extra metres and climb for my knee. Then bigger when after the out of bounds area probably interpreted the edge of the ob area wrong and left it 90 degrees wrong way.. Ended up confused and finally found the road but was way too right on it - didnt make any sense to return to go around the lake on the left side. Quick change of plan so. I had noticed on the field that my knee was okay running on flat but couldnt go fast in terrain. Road it is! The route choice I'd never normally take, long way around on the road, wasnt actually too bad and nailed the control finally.

8, 9, 10 & 11 following a group/on tracks. 11-12 again a long leg. Heard someone at 11 pointing out the road option and thought great, I'll do that! Made it quite easy - without the knee hurt I wouldn't have gone that much around though. Small wobble in the circle, didn't check descriptions and thought it was below a cliff when it was a boulder on the hill.

13, 14 & 15 easy short legs but could feel myself getting tired and couldn't shuffle very fast in the terrain. 16 was fun when again a short road option. 17 again not bad, following a trail.

17-18 I'm quite happy with! At this point it was clear I couldn't go fast and was getting tired -> needed to go steady and minimise extra metres caused by mistakes. Following a track to find the path. Couldn't know exactly where on the path I was so decided to play it safe and go left until seeing the bigger road to know exactly where I was. Didn't need to go that far and was able to relocate based on a boulder and a bend on the path. Then compass bearing and aiming to find the sola between two hills/cliffs. Found it relatively easy, not hard to spot. Down to the road. There was someone standing on the road trying to take a compass bearing asking if we were on the road I knew we were - he was headed to the same control. I told him my plan was to take the safe option and find the veg change below the control: he liked my idea and started jogging in front of me losing me quickly. He was coming back from the control when I was approaching it and gave me a thumbs up saying it was a brilliant plan!

19, 20 & 21 quite simple following a track.
Messed up 22, I guess just tired. On QuickRoute it doesnt look too bad but I was completely lost and had no idea where I was. Just top tired to make spaghetti anymore, my head was moving a lot faster than my body. Finally found a cliff I was able to locate on the map and found my own control after finding approximately all controls on that tiny hill.. Jog to the finish.

All in all not a great run. Had trouble with my tummy almost the whole way starting already early in the run and then the banged knee slowed me down further. Then I let my tummy problems and the knee to affect my head which lead to stupid brainfarts. Not many good controls but 17-18 was good planning and execution. And towards the end of the course got more and more comfortable doing my own thing - also helped that most of the time didnt have trains to follow and when I did I couldnt keep up with them.

Maybe better next year!
