Swimming (Lake swim) 4:55 [3] 0.16 km (30:44 / km)

Water temp 4 degrees. Felt much more than 1 degree warmer over yesterday. One swimmer had gotten into difficulties and was being looked after when I arrived. I think had swum too long in cold water then spent too long in sauna afterwards, all having not swum at the lake for a very long time. So even though I was tempted to swim a few minutes extra I stuck to being sensible and got out after my usual 5 mins... no point being silly, will wait till the water is properly warm.

GPS track funny for first half, very off... was doing fine until number 6, a very small spur on a slope that really needs remapping.... doesn't excuse taking 13 minutes on that leg, a loss of at least 10 mins. But came at it from pacing path then down, missed. Paced from platform, missed. Paced along contour at roughly right height, missed. Eventually relocated off path bend and paced along contour and there it was. Seemed too low in relation to both platform and the path above..., and the "spur" it was on was barely a distinct feature... I think the control could have been hung slightly more visibly, having it on a dodgy feature and then tucking it in so tightly was a bit tough, fortunately it seems I was in very good company amongst other people who had trouble with same.... still, enjoyable course and since I knew that slope is a bit dodgy I should have been more careful/creative with that one....

Swimming (Lake swim) 5:03 [0] 0.16 km (31:34 / km)

3 degrees water, felt colder. Apparently it was 2.8 and they rounded it up.... just up to swim limit and back. Felt lovely.

Orienteering race (WNL NWO West Woods) 1:07:20 intensity: (18 @1) + (1:00 @2) + (19:56 @3) + (44:43 @4) + (1:23 @5) 7.03 km (9:35 / km) +248m 8:08 / km

Started well, 11, 15, 16, 28, 21, 20. Then missed 14, by not much. Tough to see far in the mist with headtorch shining right back in eyes.... relocated off track junction and got 14. Abandoned plan to get further away controls, 19, up to 22. missed 22, spent some time looping around, eventually bailed out onto track and went back in and there it was.... lost too much time now, plan had been to pick up all the low value controls but had to aim for the one high pointer and whatever I could get on way back now. Then got stuck in Brambles, couldn't find my way through them at all! Eventually fought my way out, got 12, fell over, map in mud... 26 ok, then got stuck in brambles on way to 4. 9, 3, 2, 1 (having not headed the warning to avoid the area around 1!) and aimed for 8, missed, and went straight back. 7.20 late. Think I scored 335 but lost 74 in penalties.... lots of fun, but muddy, brambly hell in the mist so not that successful....!

Good turn out on a cold night with 6 of us. Good to see George and Paul on a Tuesday and Michael back from Uni. Some trepidation when Ifor asked how adventurous we were feeling, that can lead to an interesting evening. But new route was pretty good, lost the path in the golf course for a bit but still fun. Shame the industrial estate got in the way at the end, but nice to get back in the lanes and felt pretty good pushing up the last few hills. Pub a bit posh mind....

Shadowing Aleksi's daughter Essi around the junior course, really interesting from a planner's perspective to see a course and map from 10yr olds point of view. Managed to keep up with her until after the finish when she challenged me to race up to the top of the hill..... power to weight ratio very clearly in her advantage!!!

Orienteering race (TVOC Didcot Urban M40) 37:42 intensity: (5 @0) + (10 @1) + (11 @2) + (23 @3) + (17:16 @4) + (19:37 @5) 7.32 km (5:09 / km) +13m 5:06 / km

Beautiful day, clear sky, but icy roads in shade. Tried to pick straighter routes with less cornering! A few interesting route choice legs, no nasty tricks or surprises. Very enjoyable although Aleksi beat me by 15 seconds...... 11th of 45 on M40+
