Out with group again into grey sky and some snow. Climbed up to top of aurinkokuru (sunshine gorge) and would you believe it, at that moment the sun came out. lovely to play on way down the gorge (or combe maybe is better translation for this one) and then onto luulampi (bone pond) for lunch. Back up again through kettukuru (fox gorge) again in most fantastic sunlight before a final descent through the reindeer fence back to fell centre. Couldnt ask for better scenery, company or weather.
First time out on classics this year, felt great. Glide wax a bit slow in the -9 conditions but kick waxing perfect which is the main thing. Stayed in tracks for all but steepest climbs. out over Ahopää to Saariselkä, with half a mind to go the beautiful kulmakuru trail. In the end had doubts about the condition so went for more certain vellinsärpimäoja trail. Stopped for lunch at vellinsärpimäkämppä and lit a fire in the stove to dry my sweatsoaked back and jacket... stove only warming up by time i was ready to leave, but the next folk along would find a nice warm cabin! The prettiest machine made trail here, a long, mostly gentle, climb is rewarded by about 5km of undulating and winding descent through the forest. Finally a long, hard, slog of a climb over kiilopää fell into a freezing headwind and in flatlight, followed by a steep, fast descent to fell centre, light made it impossible to see trail so snowploughed and mistly trusted that trail would be in tact and in front of me..... clothes into dryer, Tommi into sauna, then to set about replacing some of the 4000 calories burnt
