Orienteering race (Queens High) 12:50 [3] *** 2.5 km (5:08 / km) +10m 5:02 / km
ahr:154 max:181 spiked:17/18c shoes: Salomon 3D S-Lab Red/Yel #2

Ran first leg for ROC Senior Mens 1 team. Had a very good race, finishing only 3 secs behind Jeremy. We were together most of the way, me taking the lead for a control or two. Read the map well and no major mistakes except for 1 narrow passage where I didn't see a locked gate.

Stefan and Alex went on to give us a good victory after AR Club lost time picking up a wrong map.

TE 2.8, Epoc 65, 169 kcal.

More training with Nathan and Jane. Ran the main hiking trail around Groenkloof. Felt very easy after Wartrail last weekend, but the legs were still a bit tired afterwards. Feeling stronger on the hills.

Paddling (Dabs TT) 52:28 [4] 10.0 km (5:15 / km)
shoes: K2 (Renegade)

Paddling with Brian. Good time trial. Put the motor in the back of the boat into top gear on the start line and found myself in 5th halfway down the first straight. My brain froze out of fear and applied the brakes.

Rest of TT was quite fun. Lots of boats around us. Did a lot of wave riding and managed to hop up from bunch to bunch until we caught the Evan's and Jane / Craig. A few K3s in the way to keep things interested, but Evan's didn't like the look of us and floored it.

Finished strong with a sprint against another boat. 2nd fastest time ever and the fastest with Brian who is in top form.

Paddling warm up/down 12:00 [1] 2.0 km (6:00 / km)

Multisport race (Wartrail Paddle) 3:47:58 [2] 62.5 km (3:39 / km)
ahr:114 max:155 shoes: K1 (CS Maxi)

River was in good spate, probably about 700+ cumecs?

(edit: website check says 1316 cumecs - http://www.dwa.gov.za/Hydrology/Verified/HyData.as...)

This was considerably higher than the 2006 river of 400 cumecs. The weir at Aliwail was overflowing, and practically flat over the far right side of it.

Lot of people bailed out of the paddle, but approx. 20 people still started from the start and another 10 or so put in at half way. I had a fair start and got used to the swirlies quickly. Found myself paddling with Bubbles for 10th spot. A couple of good whirlpools towards the end of the canyon, including one really big one after a rapid at about the 13km mark (first part of the right-hand hairpin bend). Easy beyond this although still requiring some concentration. Fastest km was about 20.5km/hr.

Got to halfway Hotsprings at the 30km mark in 1h44, well ahead of PB pace. Stopped for a gel and Don with Tatum in tow immediately caught and passed me. I slowly started tracking them down, eventually doing by finding faster water currents.

At the poort at 45km Don pulled away, leaving me with Bubbles and Tatum. Paddled together to the weir where Bubbles got ahead and I dropped Tatum. Finished 11th overall, knocking about 17 mins off my PB. Felt strong at the end still, so paddling is going good.

Hotsprings (31km): 1h44

TE 2.0, Epoc 28, 1539 kcal.
