Sunday Aug 20 #

Road Running 2:05:05 [3] 28.25 km (4:26 / km) +600m 4:00 / km

Long run from Loen before the journey back. First half undulating trails next to the lake but once it got too overgrown I turned back and did the last half on the small road. Just ran it relaxed for the first hour then moved a bit quicker nearer the end. True to his word Jono drove past and gave me a drink on the second half.

Warm up running a few km to the race start then a bit of the course. Jogged down some of the mountain after too.

Hill running race 1:11:36 [5] 8.2 km (8:44 / km) +1820m 4:08 / km

Skaala Opp race. Returned to the race after 6 years and managed to take over a minute per year off my previous time. Tried to start easy and stayed in 3rd behind Stian for the first third of the course, Johan Bugge was leading and 30-40s ahead. In the middle section I faded a bit and lost concentration, Stian pulled further away and the guy behind got closer. Once it got really steep after that I felt a lot better and like I was back in the racing mindset, it probably helped saving some energy early on. I passed Johann on the steep section of slabs and seemed to be going well. Wasn't sure how far the finish was after that so probably eased off slightly and the next guy was close behind. I had to speed up after that as it flattened out and held on for 2nd place. I'm happy with that 6 days after Sierre Zinal, today was the first day I've felt like running hard so it was ideal. The only disappointment was finding out my bag weighed 200g more than necessary at the finish! That was despite it being exactly 2.5kg at the start after soaking it (was going to get wet anyway).

Easy run down the final 1km of the course then along a trail by the river and back to the hotel. Legs feeling pretty good.

Friday Aug 18 #

Run from Loen on some forest paths then checking out the first bit of the race course. Legs completely back to normal but felt really sleepy and sluggish for most of the way. Ran a few harder bits to try and wake up. Will start easy tomorrow and enjoy the race rather than pushing from the start, no idea if I'll feel recovered.

Easy run from Bergen while waiting for a bus. Some nice steep climbs from the city. Once higher up some of the paths were really rocky and muddy. Glad to stretch the legs and everything felt okay.

Wednesday Aug 16 #

Nice loop in Aberdeen going along some footpaths by a burn to Hazlehead then coming back through Maidencraig and the Denburn back to the city. Hadn't been on most of the paths before so was a good change. Legs nearly back to normal.

Easy run around a few parks on grass. Feeling pretty good, not much stiffness left in the legs.

Tuesday Aug 15 #

Easy run around Hazlehead. Legs a lot better than yesterday, felt good once I got going.

Easy run around Kingshill wood with Ginie. Went on all the smallest, steepest and muddiest trails possible. Legs getting better.

Monday Aug 14 #

Easy jog around Hazelhead. Legs stiff from yesterday. Actually felt better than any previous year after the race so hopefully it'll be quicker to recover.
