Hill running race 2:33:55 [5] 30.84 km (4:59 / km) +2100m 3:43 / km

Sierre Zinal for the 8th year in a row. The field was even stronger than previous times so I'd hoped to get in a good race but I ended up running fairly average and not getting close to the main action. The first climb felt slower than previous years and I didn't feel able to go any quicker without risking a blow up later. The leaders were already miles in front and I was in around 10-13th place.

Normally when it flattens out at Ponchette I can kick on and move through but it didn't happen this time and I felt sluggish. Andy overtook me going downhill to Chandolin then I got a bit of a boost and managed to stick with him and pass a few guys. Shortly after I started to feel good and ran strongly all the way to Weisshorn, getting in to 5th place and dropping Andy. I could see 3rd and 4th not far ahead on the final climb but once it flattened out I wasn't quick enough.

Ticked off the final kms feeling like I had more in the tank but couldn't speed up then ran reasonably well on the steep descent (for the first time ever). It was 30-40s slower than my best time overall but with the big gaps I needed to be 2' faster to be top 3. Some positives from it but just annoyed I wasn't able to give 100% all the way. I tried to work on my uphill/downhill more than my flat running in the last months and it may not have paid off. Also disappointing to see three athletes who've failed drugs tests being celebrated without any mention of it.

Easy run in Zinal plus strides. Moving more smoothly than the last days but still some stiffness.

Friday Aug 9 #

Easy run along the river then some strides. Trying to get the legs moving again. The strides felt so slow so did a few hill sprints on the way home too which were better.

Thursday Aug 8 #

Longish climb from Malonno then easyish running back down. Warm humid day but everything more or less fine, bit of stiffness from yesterday but not bad.

Easy run by the river with Andy. Legs quite lethargic from not turning over quickly recently.

Wednesday Aug 7 #

Along the river trail plus the hill down from the church and back up after the session. Bit tired on the hill going back but legs not bad.

Running, mostly off road intervals 15:00 [5] 4.77 km (3:09 / km) +30m 3:03 / km

5 x 3' (90s easy) on the river trail with Jacob. Reps 1,3 and 5 slightly uphill and the other two going downhill, big difference in speeds but generally getting quicker through the session. Legs were almost back to normal after the weekend but it took a few strides in the warm up to get up to speed and the first rep or two felt slow.

Tuesday Aug 6 #

Easy hilly run on the other side of the valley. Some overgrown trails and wrong turns but also some nice climbs. Warm and humid today. Legs slightly better but still stiff at the start.

Hill running 1:00:01 [2] 9.68 km (6:12 / km) +520m 4:53 / km

Easy hilly run with Andy. Longish steep climb then more gradual downhill back to the church. Fair bit of road running mixed in. Stomach wasn't great and still some leg stiffness.

Monday Aug 5 #

Easy run by the river with Jacob. Moderately bad DOMS from yesterday in glutes but quads and calves not bad. Eased off throughout.
