(rest day)

Everything sore as expected. Muscles not feeling too bad yet but got battered and blistered feet plus stiff joints. Not sure when I’ll be back running but a few easy weeks are needed!

Road Running 5:30 [2] 1.2 km (4:35 / km)

Token warm up jog. Actually loosened off quicker than usual which saves doing more.

Hill running 6:48:30 [4] 81.49 km (5:01 / km) +3100m 4:13 / km

TNF 50 mile. Big step in to the unknown and a few lessons learned. First 18km was dark with fog patches which were really hard to see with the head torch. The pace felt easy to me sitting just off the back of the lead group but if I’d looked at the splits I’d have seen it was closer to 4’00”/km and way too quick.

I dropped a few seconds at the first aid station and took a while to get back in 4th or 5th which I held for quite a while. Felt still within comfort zone and took on plenty fluids and energy right from the start. I wasn’t enjoying the maurten after 2hr but missed my fresh bottles of tailwind at 37km so had no other choice. At half way I was only a few mins off the lead but noticed my legs had zero power on the climbs. Still made up one place around 45km but was feeling awful. Grabbed as much as possible at the next aid station but wasn’t running smoothly with all the full bottles in the race pack. The next two climbs were horrific, even considered bailing out but I was still in 6th and didn’t see anyone behind.

Going in to the final 15km I had a second wind and ran all the final climb. Passed a guy at 75km and then ran pretty strongly to the end. It wasn’t too bad a result but there were so many good climbs and fast descents I couldn’t make use in the second half after starting too quick. Happy to get through it without any major issues though.

Running, mostly off road 33:44 [2] 7.53 km (4:29 / km) +30m 4:24 / km

Easy along the coast then a little loop looking at the final bit of downhill to the race finish.

Running, mostly off road 1:22:36 [2] 16.4 km (5:02 / km) +500m 4:22 / km

Easy run along the coastal path then over Golden Gate Bridge and on part of the race course to Marin city. Nice smooth trails most of the way and short rolling hills. Dry and loose in places and a few steps too. Legs and foot felt stiff and tired so hopefully they improve before Saturday’s race!

Running, mostly off road warm up/down 49:18 [2] 10.32 km (4:47 / km) +170m 4:25 / km

Warm up along the coastal path. Cool down exploring a few steeper trails around Presidio. Enjoyed it.

Running, mostly off road 15:00 [5] 4.82 km (3:07 / km)

3 x 5’ (2’ easy) on the coastal trail. Nice little leg loosener before the weekend. First one felt sluggish but by the end I was going better.
4 PM

Road Running 29:02 [2] 5.36 km (5:25 / km) +200m 4:34 / km

Short steep run up to the park at Presidio and back. Can’t believe how steep some of the streets are here.

Running, mostly off road 38:47 [2] 8.65 km (4:29 / km) +20m 4:26 / km

Post flight run along the coast from the north end of San Francisco. Was so tired that I was going to bail but once in the fresh breeze and sun it felt a lot better. Sandy trail along the coast was ideal underfoot.

7 AM

Running, mostly off road 45:47 [2] 10.15 km (4:31 / km) +100m 4:18 / km

Easy Deeside line and Crathes loop. Just getting light enough not to need the torch. Legs felt fine but the path had a lot of puddles so it felt slower than normal.
5 PM

Road Running 43:10 [2] 9.09 km (4:45 / km) +70m 4:34 / km

Easy run around town plus extra with the group session. Also ran with two school groups so been a busy day.
