Hunting in progress. Had to postpone my plan of running WOC2011 middle distance qualification to this afternoon. Ran to La croix des bergers instead.

Orienteering (savage) 29:19 [3] *** 4.47 km (6:34 / km)

Re-ran the WOC 2011 middle qualification. Tried to put some kind of speed, but the snow on the coldest places, the new clearings, and the rain finished to kill a bit of my enthusiasm.

With that time, I would have been 10th of my heat, beating Jarkko by 2 seconds, and it is enough to make a happy 31st December ; ). No gps tracking to compare unfortunately (if I remember right, only the finals had gps tracking).

Good bye 2015! Put it back in your storage*, 2016 looks a lot brighter ! Wish you all a Happy New Year.

*Lizzie tried hard to explain me the difference between kiwi bird, kiwi fruit, and kiwis, but this is all still pretty unclear ; )

Today, I ran the WOC 2011 women´s long distance - a race where Annika had a legendary performance. Such a good one that the speaker, when she crossed the finish line, believed she had jumped a control, or forgot to run one of the loop…

Most of the terrain was snow-free today, except the last couple of tricky controls near the arena. Also a much better visibility in the first slope as this part is covered with lobed-leaved trees.

I saved my pride by running the race a bit faster than Annika, but I still believe it was one of the best run we have ever seen at World Championships.

Not sure if we ever had a better view at a WOC start. Same sunny day but about 20°C less…

An empty finish arena.

Re-ran a middle distance from our 2014 WOC preparation in Le Semnoz (World Cup terrain 2011).

Always fun to compare the times and routes against yourself. I was probably in better shape the 20th June 2014, with the WOC just around the corner, and there were flags at control sites. But today, there was no leave anymore and the undergrowth was also close to zero. I had also less mistakes today and ran the course about 2´30´´ faster.

As in 2014, we didn´t visited the 17th control, map was inaccurate there.

An Irish touch at today´s training, with the Short brother, Conor & Ruairí. Nice.

A training in Le Semnoz, always ends by a tour at the top. La Tournette (2351m.a.s.l) in front, Mt Blanc in the back.

View toward the south.

No more training for the day, Christmas dinner preparation starting from now.
Merry Christmas to all crazy orienteers!

Be brave…

Drove toward east to visit a new terrain around Alunda. Pretty nice and fast forest there. We ran two diamonds at competition speed and got twice kicked by Albin. Should sharpen my game.

Only few people this morning, but the very best ones! Sauna afterward – luxury! And my gingerbread was probably my best performance of the day...

The plan for tonight was to collect back my jacket I had let under a tree during one of UTH trainings two weeks ago, being too busy to keep up with the fast Daniel Rönnqvist, 16 year´s old…

As Albin joined the fun, we went for a night forked corridor, followed by a micro-sprint. Altogether, it made a quite close-from-perfect evening, and, on top of that, my jacket is almost dry…

“I’m back to being the little kid who once said anything is possible,” says Phelps. “You’re going to see a different me than you saw in any of the other Olympics.”

Had a slow start this morning, as I started reading the long Sports illustrated reportage on Olympic legend Michael Phelps. Some really good parts.

“Sometimes you look back on your career and say, ‘Did I ever swim my best race? Did I ever really maximize myself?’ I saw Michael last summer in Los Angeles and he looked like he was in fantastic shape.’’

Pleased that Eva gave me the possibility to run this training in one of the fastest terrain around Halden, before traveling back to Uppsala. Nice for tired legs and also quite rewarding that the speed and navigation are still pretty decent.

Short O-intervals. I rested one minute between each interval.

Driving home from Halden is always quite long and boring.

Spiced it this time with a quick stop in Vasterås, and fulfilled one of my old project of re-running WOC races from 2004. Well, the highlight will be for later on with the middle distance final. Started with the sprint races – qualification and final in Rocklunda. Night and not a full effort, but fun anyway. Quite different from nowaday´s sprints…

A new fence after the 3rd control. And some snow cannons (wtf) between 6th and 7th. Otherwise, map about the same. With that run, I would have been 31st of my heat : (

In final, I would have been 43rd, but only a few seconds behind Antti. Not the race of his life… ; )

Possibly the best cover picture of O-sport, for one of the greatest achievement ever. Full article if you click on the picture

Relay training with NOF in Fredrikstad.

3 times about 2,5km with a restart after each loop.
Lack of experience of this terrain as I never ran Blodslitet so far.

Destroyed an otherwise good technical performance in the first loop with a straight route to the 6th control, crossing the steep cliffs (icy 6B+). Got tempted by some narrow passages there but that was way slower than going around, once again.

The 2nd and 3rd loop went better, even though I not always figured out where was the best runnability in the terrain. But that's most probably why I am training here. To learn.

Also tested some "far-from-redline" alternative in the long leg. Pleased to see that I am slooooowly learning something in this terrain. Nothing is for sure though…

#happiness

Too happy that I decided to visit twice nr9… Love does not count the cost.

Small note: As you might have noticed already, I ran quite many control-picking trainings. Of course, it is both a good work-out for middle distance and improving compass (in & out routines). But long distance is also about splitting longer legs into smaller tasks. It was the great Swede from 90ties, Johan Ivarsson, who once said that a long distance was in fact only three consecutive middle distances (or four short distances at that time?!). When I got this in mind, running long distance became a lot easier.

One middle distance split in 2 parts. Ran it at competition speed. Really enjoyed the course in different types of forest. The first part been more runnable and the second part covered with much heather.

Pleased with the technical execution today after last night failures.

Pro-tip: To keep the self-confidence on an acceptable level (read: sky-high), you need to put a lot more effort to get back on track after a bad run. It means activating all your (good) routines again (good and long warm-up, pre-race inner talk, etc) to make it easier for yourself. Also, it can be good to spice your preparation with an extra motivation.

A champion's mind is usually a simple one. Last night, after the night training, I got a phone message of Vincent Coupat, teasing me with my compass skills. He had followed the live tracking and it seems he wasn´t much impressed.
This morning, I wanted to show him I could handle his terrains and had a full focus on compass. Hope he enjoyed the tracking. ; )

Black and white. Another example, back in 2007, at Jukola. Couple of days before the relay, I lost the control of my car in a typical Finnish gravel road and crashed it. Scarier than really dangerous. Kalevan Rasti was in a short lead before the start of the last leg and I was supposed to start my leg with about 1 minute lead. Right before my start, Mats Haldin, Halden´s anchor, cracked into a smile: "try to stay on the road this time!" Instead of breaking my concentration, it had the opposite effect. I had the best start I ever had in a relay, and was really eager to show him how to handle Finnish terrains (soft version). Simple mind work best…

UTH, 5th training - a long course with only contours in Nåsten.

Nice to have a training at easier speed today, and to cruise in the whole Nåsten.

Always nice to remember where the tracks goes in the contours map…call it home advantage.

UTH, Final, an Ultrasprint - always the highlight of the weekend!

Had some good flow for some short periods of time, but had also a hard time to find two units in the leaves, and spiced my race with one giant mistake (« giant » in Ultrasprint, means overpassing the control by 20 meters). Smashed by a junior guy. Classic.

This UTH was a big hit once again, thanks to a great effort of Ridefelt family and all the other helpful hands. Tack så mycket, det var trevligt!

UTH, 3rd training - a warm-up and cool-down with contours map, and a set of short intervals for the middle part.

Ran it with Jan Troeng, and we keep challenging each other the whole way. Gathered some more runners for the intervals part which was also fun.

Another mix of good and bad doings this morning. Having lot of troubles to be patient and stay behind people when they do well.

Have the whole afternoon to elaborate a better plan for tonight's mass start (maybe the most elaborate one : "read your map, donkey") and try to still remember it at 6:30pm.

UTH, 4th training - a night mass-start in Tjäderleksbergen, one of the finest area around Uppsala.

When the cat's away, the mice will play…

As the king of Lunsen didn´t showed up (Albin hurt his head yesterday´s night), I decided to rely only on myself and stick to my plan to know all the time where I was running and, if I was unsure, to dare to stop. Humble orienteering. Quite effective tonight and lead the whole way.

The first control was the highlight of this night. Dragged a small bunch of runners with the same forkings at the beginning. Far from optimal to the 7th, never really managed to get back to the best route. Got alone at 9th when I got confused when attacking the control and slowed down, seems like they were not trusting me anymore and ran with a different angle. Hej då.

The end of the course wasn´t the easiest part, especially to the 13rd control, when you had passed the small ditch, it was just a giant wet opening, with super tall grass. Luckily, I got quickly relocated with a small stone. Loved her.

11°C tonight, most of the marshes are like giant open swimming pools at the moment…

Uppsala Träningshelg by MC Albin Ridefelt, first training, “the best of Lunsen”.

Included a fun part with laser curving, with 0,25m contours interval, not much is missing. Probably hard to print at 1/15.000° though…

Super wet (seems like my gps watch didn´t enjoy it much) and not even sure if it was day time… the type of day where you need a good enough reason to live in Scandinavia. Well, at least, there is no snow ; )

UTH, 2nd training - a mix of short intervals in forest and urban areas.

Always hard to focus on the right things when you start with 100+ orienteers on about 1km long intervals. Mostly failed to find the good map reading frequency and added a lot of unnecessary bends.

New try tomorrow night!

The first thing I do, every morning, is weighting myself. It is not stressing me but I have always considered it as a really important factor of performance. Too light or too heavy is giving the same result – altering the performance.

Here comes my measures of the last 12 months.

And here comes the fat percentage over the same period of time, even though I am not trusting it much (impedance measurement).

Note

Tonight was the “Vinterträningspremiären” of OK Linné, somehow the kick-off of the winter trainings. Always lot of fun with different happenings. But this year was maybe even more fun for me, as I wasn´t running myself but in charge of a “refreshment” point in the middle of the forest. As the theme of this year was world tour, I was in charge of bringing the “French touch”…
