Jukola 2016 in Lappeenranta.
Not a perfect preparation, but still could feel in the last hours prior the race than my energy level had raised up.
After another good team effort during the night, I got sent in the wet forest in 2nd spot. My thoughts weren't about trying to catch the leader Koovee, but, as always, to get a good opening and to make it easier for myself –
a good race always begins with a good start. Then, if I am on a good day, opportunities always appear.
The first phase of the race went well, and I felt like I had quite much to give. But the long leg back (9-10) wasn't successfully executed. The challenge in Jukola is always to figure out where are the "natural" passages where tracks will be created. Sometimes, you can actually get quite good guess, sometimes you just get lucky and find a nice track going in your direction. Some other times, you feel like you are the only one running in this forest. It is how I felt on this long leg.
But I could also feel like my speed was slowly going down. Passing through the arena with Fredrik, and hearing the gap to Daniel was down to 1'15´´ was sure a nice feeling.
But a slower forking (20th) and a bad route to the 23rd finally closed down our chance to get a better result than the 3rd place. The choice of going straight on this leg came up when I had realized that going off the red line to the 10th and 17th were not paying much as Fredrik had been catching time on those legs. Self-adjustment during racing is not always the smartest ones.
So, yeah, 3rd, again. Close and far at the same time.
Here are our last results in 10mila and Jukola for the last 5 years.
3-1-1-3-3
1-1-1-3-3
That's facts. For sure, we still belong to the best teams, but we are not anymore the best one. Momentum swings faster than we think. One moment we´re on top of the world, the next falling off the other side. Koovee has now been setting the standard, and it is time for us to be creative again and reinvent ourselves.
