| Ronning race (Rottnest Marathon) 2:44:20 [5]42.19 km (3:54 / km) | ||
| Remember the plan? Wind/gale/rain all night long. The rain eased off to sideways showers just before the start. All a bit rushed, but went to the line feeling OK. First splits 340,339,334,334,335 for 1804 @ 5km. Will Withers (236 marathoner) running next to me, Martin the Swiss (236 in Lausanne Marathon this year) 50 metres behind. Now to battle across the salt lakes for the first time into a gale. Legs feeling fantastic, but cheeks puffing out of the side of my face. Next split 1819 for 3623 @10k. Still feeling great with Will surging up all the hills. Martin still 50 metres behind. Time to pop my first gel. Splits getting slower each 5km now with the wind picking up. Seem to have lost Martin. 1901,1909,1956 to 25km. Across the salt lake for the third time, lucky not to fall in, salt foaming across the road. Felt a slight twinge in the hammy. Will surged up the next hill, then the next. I am snapped, have to let go to save the hammy. 1959 to 30km, 2020 to 35km. Will still only 100 metres ahead, Swiss Martin snapping at my heels. Time to lift. Martin the Swiss and I work back up to Will just after the 4th salt lake crossing. Im starting to feel good. I look at Martin 'Lets go get him' and take the lead. Martin doesnt follow. I drive for 2km, with 6km to go things are looking good. Then Martin comes flying past...I hold him for 1km then I am gone. Will comes back at me as Martin sails off into the distance. 1st to 3rd in 2km...I have to lift again. Folklore has it pay the bagpipes man $1 at 36km or hit the wall. Martin pays him, I pay him Will does not. Will hits the wall. I set off again for Martin with 4km to go (just after I lap Beautiful, she is all the inspiration I need to see her safely in a pack and smiling). I drop Will but can make no ground on Martin. In the end all three of us finish a minute apart. A real race. 2nd place and happy with 2.44.20.
Beautiful arrives home in 3.40.10 to complete her debut marathon and make a special day for both of us. Craig Dufty takes 3rd in the 5km.

| Ronning 15:00 [3]3 km (5:00 / km) | ||
| Warm up | ||
Saturday Oct 20 | ||
| Cycling 20:00 [3]5 km (4:00 / km) | ||
| Went to check out course but far too wndy, couldn't get across the lake without falling in. Mission aborted. | ||
| Ronning 20:00 [3]4 km (5:00 / km) | ||
| Jog first lap of the course with beautiful. Legs not feeling great. Had them up most of the day. They were high enough that a seal went under them. Was quick enough to get the camera out and take a movie as it passed under the jetty. I think it was looking for fish, not salad sandwich and gatorade. | ||
Friday Oct 19 | ||
| Cycling 2:00:00 [4]41 km (2:56 / km) | ||
| Ride from the airport to the ferry at Freo. Plane late, fixing bike and pack troubles had us racing for the 3.30pm ferry. Aborted race with 9km to go in 17 minutes. Not ideal preparation for the marathon, but the 6pm ferry was just dandy. Gave us time to eat some market delicasies while we waited. | ||

| Note | ||
| AP: You?ve had a couple of dud marathons. Describe those for us.
JB: I did the Harbord Marathon twice in just under 4 hours. In 1980 I slept on Manly beach the night before. People breaking into the surf club, sex, drug deals...what a night!! Had diarrhea the whole way. Still finished despite 15 minutes on the portaloo at the 14km mark. I remember being very calm on that potty. Who gives a shit?? In 1981 I paced Dave McKenna. Actually he paced me. He prepared by drinking a bottle of vodka the night before. He went through 10km in 36 minutes, I was pacing him from a distance behind sitting comfortably on 3 hour pace, thinking what the hell is he doing. By 11km he was starting to come back to me. At 14km he gave up.. then decided to press on again walking and jogging. He was still under 3 hour pace at half way. At 30km he drank six cups of staminade and said 'I quit'. I asked him how he was going to get back to the finish. There were a few buses, but neither of us had any money. I think we walk/jogged home in 3.53. AP: So when was your first marathon? JB: I did the Lake Gillawarna marathon in 1979. I had only been running for a year, but it was just after HSC study vacation, so I was racking up over 200km a week in training instead of studying (I haven't trained as much since). Crazy stuff. I had no idea about pacing or the marathon. I was only a 35 minute 10km runner. I think someone else was doing it so I did too. Went through 5km in 19minutes+ and ran pretty much the same pace all the way home for a 2:48:36 in 6th place. The last 2km hurt, but I still backed up for a 5km cross country race later that afternoon. AP: So why did you wait over a decade until your next big marathon? JB: Orienteering sort of took over in the early 80's. In the mid-80s I was in great form but had compartment syndrome from too many long runs in the sand hills at Wanda. I was either a world beater or complete dud, depending on the calf. I found some motivation again in the early 90's when I moved to Melbourne, started training in the ferny hills at Toolangi with Brian Simmons and Greg Wilson. We did some great long runs there. It was 1hr from Greg's place to the top of Mt St Leonard, all up, often in snow. I entered the Canberra Marathon because Brian was doing it. AP: How did Canberra go? JB: I ruined it 4 days before the marathon at the Tan track. I ran the corporate Cup in 11.28 and got a micro tear in my thigh. In the marathon it had pretty much torn big time by the 15km mark. I looked at the watch and asked myself what would the worst time I would accept or pull out now. The answer was 2:29:59. I deliberately slowed to protect my thigh and made the target with 17 seconds to spare. 2:29:42. Brian ran about 2:25. AP: So why the Rottnest marathon? JB: Pretty place for a holiday, special place for us, and beautiful wants to achieve one. In a way it is our dream, her dream. AP: How has the preparation gone? JB: Pretty good I'd say. I started running again at the end of last year after a long break. It has taken a long time to get back. The two half marathons I've won on the way (Googong, ACT Vets) set me back with niggling injuries. I managed them as best I could. Other than a cold it has gone OK. Beautiful had some ITB issues since the Metrogaine, so we haven't done a really long run since then. She came good a fortnight ago so we are looking at 42.2km instead of the 10km fun run. AP: Any expectations? JB: Realistically I will struggle to break 2:40. It is all a bit of unknown. I plan to go out in 3:40-3:45 per km and hold it under 4min/km for as long as I can. I'll take lots of gels and hope I can finish it off OK. Love to run in the 2:30's. Happy just to finish in one piece and enjoy the journey

| Ronning race (Weston Creek Fun Run) 1:00:00 [5]14 km (4:17 / km) | ||
| Weston Creek Fun Run 5th 1st M40+
My last experience of this race was finding myself in the middle of Coolemon Court at the 2km mark completely lost with 3 other guys, then DNF. This year took the precaution of running the entire race as a warm up at 5mins/km with Beautiful. No problems with the signage, course accurate to the metre. Coughed and spluttered my way around the course. Lost sight of the top 3 at 3km, had a sniff of 4th for the whole race but was pretty much on my limit with the amount of bile in my chest. Legs were good. Went through 5km in 17.01 so haven't lost much form. Beautiful and I cleaned up with the lucky draws, 1st M40+, first team, free watermelon. Not a bad day.
| Ronning 20:00 [3]4 km (5:00 / km) | ||
| Jog with Beautiful through Fadden Pines. Was to be with Bella as well but she found 4 couples playing tennis at the 1 minute mark. Ran from game to game chasing tennis balls. Had to drag her kicking and screaming back home. No run for Bella. | ||
Saturday Oct 13 | ||

Thursday Oct 11 | ||
| Ronning tempo 1:00:00 [4]12 km (5:00 / km) | ||
| Jog through Fadden dodging thunderstorms, then onto the oval for a 5 minute tempo run. | ||
| Note | ||
| Somehow damaged my knee during the night. Painful still upon wake up, my heart had sunk of the feeling of missing yet another day. I searched for the voltaren and voila, two hours later all pain is gone...magic. No sign of the injury. | ||
Wednesday Oct 10 | ||
| Ronning 1:31:00 [3]18.5 km (4:55 / km) | ||
| weight:56kg | ||
| Jog around the lake with Beautiful | ||
| Note | ||
| Back almost into full training after a cold and some missed days. Still a bit chesty with softish legs, but on the way again.
11 days to the Rottnest Marathon, so should be starting a taper, but will have to bring myself back up to form with the Weston Creek Fun Run on Sunday then wind down from there. On the positive Beautiful has made some good progress from ITB troubles, has put in a couple of 90 minute runs and a 2 hour run in the last fortnight. We did a lap of the lake this morning at sub-5's which is her marathon pace. Not sure if she will be good for a whole marathon, but should get at least 1/2 way and a PB for 21.1km...see from there. Looks like I will be running the full marathon as well in moral support. I wouldn't have been unhappy if it was only 10km. Not sure if I am in winning shape for 42km, but I should be able to trot together a good 30km...see from there. Winning time is usually in the high 2.30's on a slowish and wind affected course. Last year it was only 2.50's. The pace won't be a factor. One last positive is that I knocked off some flab while I was sick, so back down to race weight again. Room for a bowl of pasta.
