GOLDRUSH TRAIL

Went as well as could be expected I think after some bigger weeks training

Its always a few KM uphill from the start at CYB so gives you a chance to see where you/everyone is at if you are racing.

I was in the first group of four without issue and when we hit the first technical bit (uphill) I put about 10m in to them which was promising.

Then Alun Williams joined me on the first flat section (knows you from New Zealand days and had a good chat after)

We spoke briefly before he drifted off easily which was cool, he is faster than me.

I could hear another two breathing now so back in a group before a longish technical downhill , I say technical ....its not really especially with the trails being bone dry but again I put some distance in to them and hit the next flat bit still second..

From there I already knew my legs were not too fresh.

Its a long downhill on fire road and the guys around me were just too fast on the nice dry trails.

I got to the bottom in fourth but all bunched up.

Again there is an uphill section that is usually muddy but bone dry today...I did move back to second but it was a real push to the point I nearly had to fell walk which I don't think I have ever done there in a CYB race.

Alun was gone and now on the road section my legs just didn't have the energy needed to stay ahead of a few of the guys.

There is a long downhill at 5 mile with lots of twists and turns so with some aggressive cornering I hit the bottom in third passing two.

4km left on fire road to the finish and I just didn't have the minerals to run hard to the finish.

Finished in 6th over 3 minutes behind Alun and top 4 went under the hour so I lost quite a bit in those last few KM.

Not a bad time for me though on that course I think and no issues with recovery after or the next morning.
