trail running (work/easy) 1:05:00 [2] 5.6 mi (11:36 / mi) +150m 10:43 / mi
shoes: Altra Lone Peak

Easy coaching but got freezing cold and wet coaching KBs first so I drover home got changed and took the dog out for and easy 20 followed by hill sprints...hands got so cold I couldn't let the handbrake off at first!

Won't be entering the spine race that is for sure.

trail running (easy/regen) 1:09:00 [3] 7.2 mi (9:35 / mi) +350m 8:20 / mi
shoes: Adidas Boston

60' easy plus hill sprints.

Windy and freezing so stayed on the quarry trail behind my house, plenty of loops so you can take layers off.

Hill sprints were good....perfect gradient for 12-14 second efforts.

Little bit of a dull ache around the soleus on right leg but not worse during the sprints.

trail running (moderate running) 1:28:58 [3] 12.4 mi (7:10 / mi) +2m 7:10 / mi

80' Moderate

Much better morning temp wise which meant the canal would not have ice...

Some low mist but apart from that just cold winter sun.

I felt really relaxed and in control for this one and extended it a few mins....no issue with the hamstring and a good morning on the canal!

Easy group coaching - walked the hill reps when they ran them - no issues.

trail running (easy) 20:00 [1] 2.3 mi (8:42 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 X Talon 200

9 AM

trail running (race) 1:21:54 [4] 13.1 mi (6:15 / mi) +80m 6:08 / mi
shoes: Inov8 X Talon 200

What a fucking weird race.

well it wasn't a race.

Left the house with plenty of time, I had a good sleep staying downstairs for the night and sleeping from before 9pm.

It was -4 degrees when I left and got to registration (at the finish line) over an hour before the start.

Then they stick you on a coach to the start 9 miles away but the bus has to wait to fill up then go through a load of lanes.

I was on the second bus to leave and got to the start at 08:40!!

it hadn't got much warmer so I was still layered up, needed a shit and had to try and warm up on a busy road with no pavement so a 9am start was out the window.

I just relaxed and joined the endless toilet queue (4 portaloos for 600 people) at least happy I had warm clothing on.

I knew the guy running the luggage wagon (Charlie Sharpe) and he told me only about 10 people had made the start for 9am.

Dumped my kit with him and walked on to the start area.

literally a path just wide enough for 2 people and a starting mat.

Off you go.

It wasn't a trail.

It was a pavement/path apart from when you had to cross about 5 roads or run through a council estate at one point.

It sounds like a shit route and for me it kind of was.....

Essentially a big organised group run along the old railway line.

there was a nice view at time across the Wirral but I can get that out my bedroom window.

Anyway, running wise it went OK.

No racing with anyone just chasing/dodging slower runners for the first half and trying not to hit the deck when we the icy road sections.

About half way I could feel my hamstring just get a little tired more than anything is the best way to describe it.

Felt like I couldn't push on or it would cramp up or worse.

It might not have but without knowing where I was in the race I just protected it a little. Still working hard but I think I had more if I was 100% confident nothing would go ping.

The temp meant that I just didn't warm up....my hands were like blocks of ice at the finish and the last 3 mile loop was that busy full of joggers/dog walkers and mobility scooters I decided against the extra three miles.

The car was 2 miles away so just warmed down to that and got the hell out of the Wirral.

Sorry if it sounds like a pity party.

I am actually pretty pleased and 1:21:54 is a PB and by the time I got home I had found out I finished third place.

A few hours later and the hamstring feels no different to before the race so that is the main positive.
