Started Equinox 24 as I got given the place and could run as long as I wanted without ever being more than 5km away from safety if my achilles blew.
It was a bit weird because for the first two hours I had pretty large group running with me, I assume pacing off me expecting me to do well but I knew that 24hours would be stupid....plus they all dropped off after lap 2 so I could run on my own finally.
Maybe the length of run was still a little daft but apart from lap 2 and 3 (between 10/30km I didn't feel any aggravation..)
The running felt very easy and relaxed then from the second hour it rained HARD..
I just ticked off the laps then all off a sudden we were at 50km and I still felt OK.
From 50km I could feel that my legs were a little heavier than usual and general tiredness that I would expect later in the race showing my lack of training really.
Then after lap 7 I convinced myself that I could feel the achilles again but not much...
What was concerned about was I think I had moved in to that mode where your brain blocks out most of the aches and pains and I was just coasting a bit....I decided to walk for 5 minutes around half way and see if anything popped up.
I could feel a bit of an ache in the calf also then when I started running on the trail again on a tricky downhill I could feel it with every step.
I made the decision straight away in my head that I was done there and was happy with that....8.5 hours in.
Had an easy 4km run back to the camp and told everyone it was finito...
No limping around or major pain but if I prodded the tendon it was sore so I gave my number in before any tried to convince me other wise and ordered a pizza.
I had asked everyone to keep my position a secret from me incase I got carried away. I had just gone from 5th to 3rd even with the bit of a walk but when I finished I really didn't care, was just happy to have a long run.
Spent the rest of the night supporting the teams and generally being a nuisance.
