Orienteering race (TVOC Christmas Common) 1:21:26 [5] **** 11.22 km (7:15 / km) +366m 6:14 / km

A bit of an up-and-down week (mostly down). Had a cold to start with and then when I was recovering from that, came down with a 24-hour fever that kept me glued to the sofa yesterday - I think the bursa on my right hip that's been troubling me the last fortnight finally “burst” after some aggressive foam rollering on Friday. I've had one before on the other hip and this seemed like the same symptoms. Yesterday I was not a happy bunny – should’ve been racing a league XC – all I managed was a crawl to the paper shop at lunchtime.

Brown course, 9.4km 19c, 265m. 25th/59 (fastest 53:30!). Christened my new TVOC O-top today :) Ran straight past #1, annoying! and wasted 3 min running in circles to find it, remembered to keep moving and not slow to a frustrated walk. Tripped badly on the way out of #2 and bashed my knee, but otherwise kept my head on. Confused by a new-to-me symbol for #4 (a platform apparently - it looked just like a flat bit of land on the hillside when I got there though). Took a poor heading/route to #12 but found it OK. Ran past #16 to a different control - woodland border wasn't as clear on the ground as marked on the map - and then took a dodgy route out but corrected fairly quickly to find #17. Gave myself a telling off there - losing concentration after an hour is no good!

Generally went a bit more aggressive with cutting across the land although it was covered in windblown branches and brambles. Learning to love “track-up” navigation with the new compass which has a nice cut out for my thumb, enabling me to “thumb the map” – something I realised I rely on at a Saturday Series O the other week (http://theorienteeringshop.com/WebRoot/Store30/Sho...). There were times today when I actually felt like I was properly navigating to the next control – especially when a few of them just popped up out of the land ahead as I was running on a heading :)
