Orienteering race (WAOC Maulden Woods. Brown) 1:27:06 [4] *** 11.45 km (7:36 / km) +252m 6:51 / km

Brown course: 8.5km/95m 26c

The last few forest events I’ve done have also been on 1:10000 maps, so I quickly found my way off the start and #1 and #2 without too much faff. Then, ran past the top of the gully where #3 was hiding (the gully dropped sharply away in amongst holly thickets, so easy to miss) and spent 5-6 minutes circling in the next re-entrant before doubling back and finding it. Didn’t panic, but concentrated on more accurate navigation, remembering to try to pick obvious attackpoints.

Left the path too early for #6 when I should’ve run at it from the obvious path junction 5m further along. Overran #7 - the vegetation boundary I was following to it wasn’t very distinct - and had to double back along the earth bank it was sitting on. Maybe I could’ve approached from the other end of the bank, but it was overprinted with the purple line to the control! Ran too far R off the path for #8 and had to loop back (uphill and slow, of course). Slightly confused by the map marking for the OOB field fence around #9 (a thick purple line, why not mark it with two ticks? Although I suppose there was quite a lot of map detail there which might’ve been confusing), but found the control inside the fenced area OK after a bit of a fight through 'open’ covered in dead bracken.

Then I had a run of good legs, finding useful features to guide me into the controls and just the odd dither or two inside the circle. Having taken the first half fairly steadily I still had some energy left for the more open running towards the end of the course and got closer to fastest leg times in the second half. Maybe a bit of an indirect route to #17, a banana for the short route to #19, and could’ve cut some corners for #24 (played it safe when tired).

Interesting area to run around, some varied terrain and contours, although on this longest course we did seem to visit the rat run between the OOB areas in the middle quite a bit. Not much leaf cover in the woods made spotting some controls easier. But for the blunder at #3, I’m happy with that run. 11th/25, without that error I’d have made 8th?
