Orienteering race (Busketts Lawn) 55:22 [5] *** 7.66 km (7:14 / km) +80m 6:52 / km
ahr:159 max:169 spiked:12/19c (injured)

Blue, nominal 6.6km

Ran in Hokas, for the comfort on my achilles. I'd bought some Speedgoats in the week, Sportshoes.com were having a sale. They were pretty good in this terrain, if heavier than my usual Invo8 racers.

Bang on for #1, #2, #3, then R instead of L at the earth bank for #4 (should've headed off from it for a more straightforward choice, looped round +40s). Bang on for #5 (hidden in some close forest) and #6, if running slowly. I appear to be having a good nav day.

Then a couple of poor controls: looped in the circle for #7 after being slightly too far R over the top of the feature (+25s). Compass bearing for #8, but failed to read the ground properly as I approached the circle and bounced off the stream behind it and then looped twice (running near/past the control both times, bugger, +120s).

#9 and #10 straightforward with some open sections where I'd normally stretch out my legs, but not today, still rather unfit. Hardly gained at all on a slower runner in a red + white shirt ahead. Slightly too far R from my attackpoint for #11 (+10s), and then indecisive to #12 (+20s). Caught by a couple of faster runners here, but I struggled to stay in touch with them, frustrating.

Straightforward to #13, #14, #15, following one BADO guy who'd passed me, then switched to the open path on the S for #16 (easier in Hokas than the forest) and didn't see him again until #19. Bamboozled by a weird #17, 5 metres on the other side of a wire fence. Climbed it going out but snuck through the middle of the wires coming back, very slow. Ran a couple of loops for #18 hidden in a depression on the top of a rise, it seemed to be further over the feature than was mapped (+110s); the mapping was a bit vague here (or was it me being vague?). Straightforward for #19 and then arsed about crossing and recrossing a small stream for the finish, d'oh.

Had in mind this afternoon's WIM informal, only 30mins drive across the New Forest, but decided to save something for tomorrow. Achilles not too bad, will need a bit of a stretch.
