Thursday Aug 31

Running - road or flat warm up/down 11:00 [2] 0.8 mi (13:45 / mi)
(injured)
First attempt at running, to the Birch Bend loop and back. Muscle was "there" but not bad. Beautiful blue sky day - should be hiking high! Oh well, there will be others.

Wednesday Aug 30

Walk/Hiking/Snowshoe 2:00:00 [1] 2.0 mi (1:00:00 / mi)
(injured)
Seven hours wandering around at Santa's Village with Kari, Suzanne, and all grandchildren. I started with a groin wrap Ace, then took it off about half-way through the day. Limped a lot; tried to sit as much as possible. Time and distance are very approximate. Muscle spasms came and went.

Tuesday Aug 29

Swimming 15:00 [1]
(injured)
Playing in pool with kids. No way could I do a whip kick with my breast stroke. In jacuzzi for some time.
Walk/Hiking/Snowshoe warm up/down 45:00 [1] 1.2 mi (37:29 / mi)
(injured)
Walked (limped) into Diana's Baths with S and grandkids. Started heat treatment at home. Two Advil in middle of night helped sleep comfort.

Monday Aug 28

Note
(injured)
Left groin tightened badly on drive hiome from CT (see injury report). I assume this is from the interval training. Some years ago I vowed not to do intervals again because I get groin pulls, but I thought I was in better training this time from all the trail runs. Evidently not. This could put me out of real training for months.

Sunday Aug 27

Walk/Hiking/Snowshoe 1:10:00 [1] 3.2 mi (21:53 / mi)
Latimer Point Rd and loop in the rain and wind, first half with Suzanne.

Saturday Aug 26

Running - road or flat warm up/down 15:00 [2] 1.4 mi (10:42 / mi)
Birch Bend.
Running - road or flat intervals 25:00 [5] 4.2 km (5:57 / km)
max:150
6 x 1:37 (350 m) with 2:30 recovery on Birch Bend. Slight uphill at beginning and especially end to get me good and anaerobic. Felt good at the time, but I may never do it again!.

Friday Aug 25

Walk/Hiking/Snowshoe 3:00:00 [1] 5.9 mi (30:29 / mi) +120m 17:50 / km
Four hours of birding on foot (only "claimed" three). Seven warbler species in various places with some confusing immatures kept me happy. Not too much other stuff. Legs and the rest of me pretty tired by the end. I don't think this is "rest"!

Thursday Aug 24

Running - road or flat 1:01:00 [2] 5.8 mi (10:30 / mi)
Hurricane, Crown Ridge, Cranmore with Heather (the middle part of her 12 miles). Legs pretty sore at end.

Wednesday Aug 23

Running - hilly or rough 2:14:00 [2] 8.5 mi (15:46 / mi) +410m 8:31 / km
More redlining on Randolph paths wihile Suzanne met with a student in Gorham. Finished Vyron D. Lowe Tr., Pasture Path, Notchway, and tiptoed down steep rocky Sargent Path. 2.5 miles on road. Cool, mostly cloudy so fine running.
Walk/Hiking/Snowshoe 1:40:00 [1] 3.7 mi (27:02 / mi) +240m 13:59 / km
Pine Mountain via Ledge Tr up, road down, with Suzanne in afternoon.
Running - hilly or rough 20:00 [2] 0.6 mi (33:18 / mi) +130m 12:23 / km
Ran down Pine Mountain Tr to the point I had reached last week, then back up, while S. waited on top. Today's 9.2 miles of redlining brought my remaining miles down below 500! Yeay.

Tuesday Aug 22

Running - road or flat 59:00 [2] 5.8 mi (10:09 / mi) +35m 6:12 / km
Crown Ridge and Cranmore with Heather. She's faster than I am these days.

Monday Aug 21

Walk/Hiking/Snowshoe 31:00 [1] 1.5 mi (20:40 / mi)
Stroll on roads and possible future trails in the Village. Heather saw our local bear just up the street today.

Hiked from our tent with Suzanne to redline various undone sections of trail on the north slope of Mt Adams and Madison - Inlook, Kelton, Lower Bruin, Scar, Fallsway, Brookbank. Swam at Salroc Falls, then drove to Lowes Store for refreshment!

Wednesday Aug 16

Running - hilly or rough hills 2:30:00 [2] 7.4 mi (20:16 / mi) +530m 10:18 / km
First leg of Mahoosuc Tr from Gorham up to A.T. Some trouble getting started as trail no longer went over dam (which was locked) but way around the north end of the power pond. Redline.
Running - hilly or rough 1:15:00 [2] 3.0 mi (24:59 / mi) +330m 11:35 / km
After the Mahoosuc Tr run, Pine Mountain Tr out of Gorham past the WMNF boundary and the flat, but not all the way. Walked some; getting tired. Redline.
Walk/Hiking/Snowshoe 1:15:00 [1] 2.6 mi (28:51 / mi) +180m 14:45 / km
Backpacked in less than half a mile with Suzanne and set up camp at junction of Sylvan Way and Randolph Path, then hiked lowest section of the latter (redline).

Tuesday Aug 15

Biking 1:50:00 [1] 13.0 mi (8:26 / mi)
Easy biking while Heather ran - she's in marathon training, I'm not. Power line double track to Shaws with about 0.5 mile of gnarly single track where I couldn't keep up with her. I came back relatively fast on N-S Rd as she kept running for another hour or more.
Running - hilly or rough tempo 26:41 [4] 3.1 mi (8:36 / mi) +60m 5:03 / km
Last race of Saucony Summer Series. Went out slow with little warmup, then sped up. Not very fast after a week with no running at all.Legs fine, breathing labored.

Monday Aug 14

Note
(rest day)
100% rest. Body feels fine so far.
C • Glad you had a good hike :-) 1

Sunday Aug 13

Backpacking 9:30:00 [1] 19.3 mi (29:31 / mi) +650m 16:37 / km
Evergreen Link past the defunct Evergreen Valley ski area with its massive base building. Road to Shell Pond Loop, then Leach Link and Deer Hills Bypass including Little Deer Hill (all redlining). Headed for home across Rt 113 all the way through on the Slippery Brook Tr. for my third time up the Baldface Ridge on this hike.
Except for the hour of rain, the weather for this hike was super, with cool temperature and low humidity, though not clear except the first day. No significant bugs.
Legs and body pretty sore by the end of this long day, including right hip for last 10 miles. But no injuries - I didn't even fall or slip.
83 total miles of which 54 were redlined or new trails for me. I've now done 850 miles of White Mtn trails, with 510 left to go.
Biking 45:00 [1] 10.0 mi (4:30 / mi)
Back from the trailhead on my stashed bike. About 1000 feet of drop in the first 6 miles, undoubtedly my longest downhill bike ride ever. Too bad I had to use the brakes so much on the five miles of gravel road.

Saturday Aug 12

Backpacking 9:00:00 [3] 16.5 mi (32:43 / mi) +1100m 16:51 / km
Up Cold Brook Tr, once again to Red Rock Mtn then Speckled Mtn. Down Cold Brook Tr all the way, then back to Evergreen Link junction. All redlining but had to do two out and backs.

Friday Aug 11

Backpacking 9:00:00 [1] 18.5 mi (29:10 / mi) +750m 16:07 / km
Down Spruce Hill Tr, then Hastings Notch Tr and Miles Notch Tr with side trip up Red Rock Tr to Red Rock Mtn (all redlining). Took a bath while wading Pleasant River.

Thursday Aug 10

Up Baldface Circle, Meader Ridge Tr. to Rim Junction, back and down Mt. Meader Tr (all redline). Across Rt 113 to White Cairn Tr to Blueberry Mtn, then down Blueberry Ridge Tr (all redlining). Got rained on for last hour. I'm now two for two for rain when setting up a tent on the Bickford Trail. Knees now fine; it's just the biking.

Wednesday Aug 9

Biking 1:15:00 [3] 10.0 mi (7:30 / mi) +330m 4:14 / km
Bike to start of 5-day backpack at end of Slippery Brook Rd, with about 28 pounds aboard. Last 5 miles all uphill. Knees already sore and I haven't started hiking yet.
Backpacking 7:45:00 [1] 13.3 mi (34:56 / mi) +950m 17:47 / km
Slippery Brook Trail, Mt. Eastman, Baldface Knob, (all redline), Baldface CIrcle over the Baldfaces, and down Bicknell Ridge (redline). A perfect day weatherwise!!! Ate lots of blueberries. Knees sore.

Tuesday Aug 8

Running - road or flat race 22:47 [5] 3.1 mi (7:20 / mi) vdot: 42.6
Madison 5 km road race. 1/3 on dirt road. Good cool weather. Downhill first mile, uphill second, downhill first half of third mile - a lovely course. An alltime personal best for me in terms of my speed ratio to Age Standard Time, 0.81!!! Legs felt great, but I sure was breathing hard and fast.

Monday Aug 7

Walk/Hiking/Snowshoe 40:00 [1] 2.1 mi (19:02 / mi)
S and I walked to post office clearing the Village Trail, me with sickle, she with hedge clippers. Still need to kill the last of the poison ivy.

Sunday Aug 6

Running - hilly or rough long 2:40:00 [2] 12.0 mi (13:19 / mi) +400m 7:30 / km
Parked at Sawyer Pond Tr on the Kanc. Kanc and Bear Notch Rd, Rob Brook Tr (redline), Birch Hill Trail, Sawyer Pond Tr to pond and back to parking (redline). Blue sky day, cool, low humidity - perfect. Finished with a swim in the Swift River. Second half of Rob Brook Tr was overgrown, blowdowns, beaver marsh, and stream wades from washed out bridges - pretty slow - with one failed attempt at a bushwhack to avoid two stream crossings. Legs pretty sore for last 4 miles.

Saturday Aug 5

Walk/Hiking/Snowshoe 40:00 [1] 4.5 km (8:53 / km) +130m 7:46 / km
Evening walk with Suzanne after return from Ferry Beach and leaving boat at Kari's. Mt Surprise and short Eage Ridge loop.

Friday Aug 4

Running - road or flat long 1:15:00 [2] 7.0 mi (10:42 / mi)
max:120
Rt 9 toward Saco to Old Orchard Rd, then back through Ferry Beach S.P. Felt slow and sluggish; about 40 minutes warmup, 5 minutes running well, and 30 minutes cool-down! Overcast and somewhat cool after rain.
Note
About three hours sailing in super conditions to get both daughters, both son-in-laws, and all four grandchildren out - a first. Andy and I sailed around Eagle Island.

Thursday Aug 3

Walk/Hiking/Snowshoe 28:00 [1] 1.8 mi (15:33 / mi)
Early morning walk with Suzanne on Ferry Landing Trail.
Note
Before breakfast sail (after the walk) solo. Pretty steady northeast wind that only died for a little while. Probably 3/4 hour.

Wednesday Aug 2

Running - road or flat warm up/down 22:00 [1] 1.8 mi (12:13 / mi)
12 min warmup in Camp Ellis. 10 minute supposed "cool-down" on Ferry Landing Tr.; totally unsuccessful!
Running - road or flat intervals 19:00 [5] 1.5 mi (12:39 / mi)
max:150
5 X 1:35 "sprint" over the "hill" on Island View Rd with 2 minute jog. Stinky hot, broiling sun, so not very fast.

Tuesday Aug 1

Note
(rest day)
