E (running) 34:00 [1] 1.8 mi (18:53 / mi)
ahr:120 shoes: barefoot

E warmup/ cooldown at Moss field on the grass inside lane 1 . . . barefoot . . . drills . . . 6 ST on the cooldown. wow, strides barefoot feel so much different from strides in the bulky hokas. so easy to lift the knees.

I (running) 22:08 [5] 5.6 km (3:57 / km)
ahr:160 shoes: Hoka Stinson Light

the first JD "I" workout of the training year, possibly ever for me, the dreaded 4x800I on 3R rest. as advertised, this was a sufferfest, by far the hardest training to date. really the last few reps were suffering like the last 800m of a race, I believe I invoked the deity and nearly prayed in tongues . . . very interesting to observe what the unconscious dredges up in times of pain. it really was a mental challenge to do these reps as prescribed. surprisingly, the melody of a worship song began playing during the last rep. it wasn't until well after the cooldown was I able to remember the words, "I will not offer Him, that . . . which . . . costs me nothing". I song of sacrifice. the unconscious mind knows what is going on.

4x800m: 3:20, 3:23, 3:27, 3:28

I have to be satisfied with the effort and have faith that the times will come down with the body weight. Just have to keep putting in the work. Leaving the weight loss late this year. May not be ready for June. 9 weeks should be enough time to trim down. Hopefully, workouts like these will be much easier at a lower body weight.

E warmup/ cooldown on the grass inside lane 1 . . . barefoot, felt great.

R (running) 44:00 [4] 6.4 km (6:52 / km)
ahr:160 weight:198lbs shoes: Hoka Stinson Light

JD R workout, Phase 3, Week 2 . . . Q1

8x400R (4R jog): 91, 91, 92, 93, 91, 90, 90, 89

legs heavy, slow and sluggish, especially last two reps. my perception was that I was going about ~1:40 so when I saw the time, I was surprised. The rest day surely helped. I think what spurred me on was another serious masters runner doing 800m repeats on short rest so I was very conscious of passing and being passed. he was moving on at a good clip and by his warmups, clearly knew what he was doing. amazing what a little social pressure will do. free speed!

today is billy's first track meet, bonus! against rival Kirkwood. they are treating it like a practice meet so he is running three events, the opening leg of the 4x800m (returning Class 4 state champs in this event, anchor Lucas has the second fastest 800m in the state of returning seniors), the 1600m, and the 3200m so will be curious what times he can lay down. Go Statesmen!

Note
(rest day)

legs are pretty trashed from the weekend, maybe try to spin on the trainer tonight. three big Phase 3 Week 2 workouts on the menu this week, guess looking at Tue, Fri, Sun. saw some new types of workouts, some "I" workouts like I3, with short rest, which I think is 3x1M with 3 minute jog. then some 2H, 2 minute high intensity runs. think I start out with a 8x400R tomorrow. so time to get serious. this is the meat of the training season right here. and I find myself in the unenviable position of attempting weight loss while doing hard training. hopefully, that is not one stress too many. and no race in sight to "cut" for. it will not be an easy week.

E (running) 17:00 [1] 1.0 mi (17:00 / mi)
ahr:130 shoes: Hoka Stinson Light

E run to Moss track and back. return trip and two laps around the infield grass of track barefoot. I'm doing a report for my evolutionary medicine class on barefoot running so this is somewhat of a lab experiment. felt pretty good. for some reason my right footstrike is markedly different than my left. just won't do the toe-heel-toe forefoot strike well in shoes. but I tell you, 10 minutes of barefoot running on chip-n-seal definitely taught that foot how to strike with minimum impact. might be the quickest running lesson ever. and no injuries! in fact, it felt good as a cooldown run, might keep that was part of the R workout routine.

R (running) 47:00 [3] 6.4 km (7:21 / km)
max:166 weight:195.6lbs shoes: Hoka Stinson Light

JD R workout I was supposed to do yesterday but needed the sleep to recover from vacation and time change. skipped the Hub ride this morning to sleep in some more. sleep . . . good.

FINALLy got to the track after gathering all my crap from the four winds.

the prescription from JD . . .

4x600m: 2:25, 2:25, 2:23, 2:24
4x200m: 43.15, 40.20, 39.81, 38.25

man, those 600m were tough, I was pretty much done at 400m. technically, I'm not supposed to do any R repetitions over 2:00, so should really have shortened those to 500. no training benefit to that system over 2:00. but I toughed out the last 100m anyway. just to learn how to suffer over that distance.

have to admit, I went all out on that last 200m, against the advice of JD. 38 appears to be my physical limit at this weight. now begins the long grind of body fat loss. it's tough carrying around 20 lb extra body fat. I imagine myself lugging around two 10 lb steel plates, strapping them to my body and trying to run 200m fast. it's not gonna happen. I'm convinced the way forward is weight loss. legs feel great. I'm amazed I can run "fast" nearly all out at this weight and not hurt myself. a testimony to the progression of the JD phases, in spite of interruption due to illness.

E 22:00 [1] 1.12 mi (19:39 / mi)
shoes: barefoot

barefoot E run back from track.
