Orienteering race 14:40 [5] *** 3.63 km (4:03 / km)
spiked:20/22c
ASC Galaxy Sprint - NOL8
University of Tasmania - Launceston
Quite a physical good race with avg pace 4:02m/km and 90% of the run under 5:30m/km pace, but frustrating not to be higher placed due to some sloppy navigation. 11th overall, but only 12 seconds away from 6th.
I lost 17 seconds on #11 (between the thickets - 2nd control on the western loop). I ran right past it, but the thicket configuration was different to how I interpreted it on the map. I looked on the end of the thicket, but the last bush on the thicket I ran to was actually another thicket on the map. I actually thought that the site was a bit dodgy, but if I had kept my head up as I was approaching the control I would have seen the flag and saved time.
I also lost about 10-15 seconds on a poor route choice to 8. I missed the straight/right option and ran an extra 60m around the left.
Really I should have been able to run around 14.10 easily.
I woke with a funny feeling in my right thigh/hamstring, probably related to the groin soreness from earlier in the week. It was only minor, so it didn't bother me once I warmed up. It would however have a big impact on any activities tomorrow.
