Note

A great run by Julian at WOC. 24th in the long distance is sensational! He seemed to struggle a bit in the early technical session, but he was very strong for the last 75% of the course.

Running hills 19:42 [5] 4.97 km (3:58 / km) +97m 3:37 / km

Killer loop handicap race.
7 small laps, each with 2 hills based at the Pillars of Wisdom on the tan. Total of 5km

I wasn't given any handicap favours this year, so I was never in the running. Still it was a good training session though.

WOC Middle Qualification.
Well done Vanessa Round. A great run to qualify easily. She didn't even need her map for the last part of the course, leaving it behind near the second last control to save weight!
I was equally impressed with the runs from Rob Preston, Simon Uppill and Grace Crane - all similar times behind the winner (but the guys cut-offs were just a bit tighter).

Orienteering race 44:29 [5] 7.24 km (6:09 / km) +144m 5:35 / km

Vic Relays at Nerrina
3rd place for the MFR team. We were never really in the race after losing time on leg 1.
Personally I had a good race, making up time on all the teams ahead of me, catching and passing 5 minutes on Morten (MFR#3), to take 3rd place overall.

After many years, this terrain is still super challenging, and there appears to be few orienteers that can move through it at speed with little time loss.

Blair's courses and DROC's organisation were impressive.

Socks as prizes were a great idea, although there were none left for the President's team. The other course 1 winners were also left with ladies socks or men's size 12-15. Unfortunately this could disqualify DROC from event of the year nominations :-)

Orienteering warm up/down 30:00 [1] 5.0 km (6:00 / km)

Note

Back to Tour de France like sleeping patterns, with WOC online this week.
First up was the Long Distance qualification.
Aussie run of the day has to be Julian Dent. A great effort to qualify in the highly competitive men's competition. The first Aussie to do so since 2005 I believe.
Rob Preston's run was pretty solid, although I understand that he wasn't completely happy with it.

Running 35:43 [2] 6.63 km (5:23 / km) +86m 5:04 / km

Short run, including a 30 minutes stop off to cheer for Cadel Evans at the celebration in Federation Square.

We certainly do things differently here in Australia. In France, Cadel gets a couple of models to kiss him on the cheek and present him with a yellow jersey. In Australia, Cadel is presented with a branch of a gum tree from aboriginal elder "Aunty Joy".
The cringeworthy politicians didn't miss an opportunity to get on the bandwagon. Ted Baileau called it a "Cadelibration". Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott jumped on board too!
