It was fun to be back at a forest that I visited many times as a junior. I didn't remember much though, as it had been over 20 years since I ran there.
This was the big race of the week that I was aiming for. I was a little worried about Teemu Kaijalainen in the start list. We had both been injured, but I knew that he could run faster than me on a good day.
The race was going to be a good test of route choice and physical shape, so it would be a great challenge for us.
The first 3 controls were very easy, so I pushed hard in the open pine forest. Leg 4-5 was good route choice. I took the right hand track option, put my head down and attacked the hill. By the top, Craig was only 55 seconds in front of me. This motivated me to keep pushing. By control 5 I had caught a full 2 minutes on one of my main competitors.
I was careful in the slow green areas, but then pushed on again on the next route choice from 7-8, where I got a gap on Craig.
11 was the danger control. A couple of small rocks on a broad spur in native scrub. I missed it 20m too low, but then knew where I was and went straight to it. I exited the same way to get back to the track. I saw Teemu in the distance, but he appeared to be more than 4 mins back. Soon after he lost about 4 mins at #11.
I lost time to Teemu on the final route choice. I played safe and avoided the green. Teemu went straight and gained a minute. I think the he must have found a nice animal path through the medium green.
This was a good way to finish my final year as an M40, and my 4th national long distance championship in this age group. I think I was able to remain undefeated in national competitions in my years from M40-44. I missed 2017 due to the AFL Grand Final, and I ran elite in all of the Sprint and Middle distance championships.
