Wednesday Nov 29

Running hills 59:00 [3]
Hill strengthener. 4 x Airlie St + 2 Killer loops with a lap of the tan in between.
The first 2 minutes felt like yesterday, but after that I felt no abdomen pains today. Yippee!
C • no training on the 30th 4

Tuesday Nov 28

Running 1:00:00 [3]
(injured)
It was supposed to be an 8km tempo session, but I was still feeling stomach pains from the virus I caught on the weekend. As soon as I got up to about 4min/km pace, it felt like I had a constant stitch. I completed the session, but it was a tough excercise in pain tolerance. My legs and lungs felt great though. It was however, much more bearable than on Saturday, so it is getting better. Probably just needs a little more time.

I think Anne still has the same virus. She was released from hospital in the morning and went home, but then got worse again, so by the evening she was back in hospital with constant stomach pains. This was not help by the baby kicking and punching her from the inside. The pains were similar to labour pains, but nothing is happening just yet. After some pethadine, she started to feel a bit better. The baby is fine. We're hoping that Anne gets a little better before the baby comes out.

Monday Nov 27

Note
(rest day)
Full time child minding today. At least I got to watch a bit of cricket rather than being at work.
Anne seems to be ok, but the doctor is playing it safe and keeping her in hospital for another day so that she can rest.

Sunday Nov 26

Note
(sick)
Spent the day at home looking after the kids.
Thanks to Nicola for taking care of them while I was visiting Anne. She's much better and hopefully can come home again from hospital tomorrow.
C • Hope you are all better soon! ... 1

Saturday Nov 25

Event: NE end of year epic

Running 40:00 [1]
I got up and found that for some reason I had a really stiff and achy side. After voting, I tried running with Nicola and Dion, but found that my side was in agony the whole time.
It felt a bit like a rib injury, but no individual ribs hurt. It seem to hurt mostly when deep breathing, or from jarring (from the impact with the ground).
Later in the day I felt tiredness and had a fever. The more the day went on, the more I realised that I probably had an internal viral infection of some sort, perhaps similar to what Mason had on Wednesday.

Anne felt aches and pains in her stomach also, and since she is 36 weeks and 5 days pregnant, I had to take her in to the maternity hospital, and she will spend a couple of nights in there to make sure that the baby is all right.

I'll have the child minding duties, so I don't think that I'll get much work or training done in the next few days.

Friday Nov 24

Running 1:00:00 [2]
Easy run around Yarra Bend Park in the morning.

Thursday Nov 23

Orienteering race (Street O) 37:00 [4]
Street O at All Nations Park, Northcote
Won A course in around 37 minutes. I ran alone and so went fairly hard for the whole course as I didn't know if my route choice was the best. I ended up winning by around 5 minutes I think.

Wednesday Nov 22

Running 59:00 [2]
Easy run in at 6am in the morning, as I had a conference all day at work.
After that I played games with the Connex train system. There were no trains between Clifton Hill and Jolimont, so there were several thousand people waiting for trams and buses at Clifton Hill.
Luckily I returned home and got Anne to drive me in to work.

Tuesday Nov 21

Running intervals 20:00 [4]
It was 35 degrees C on the 'feels like' thermometer today. Only 31 degrees higher than 6 days ago when it was almost snowing!
6 x 500m today with 3 minute turnarounds. Not too hard with splits between 1.33 and 1.37.
It wasn't too bad as we ran most of the intervals in the shade and there was some cloud cover.
Running warm up/down 35:00 [2]
Note

The baby Arthur #3 sweep is officially open. Anne was 36 weeks pregnant yesterday (20 Nov), so she is almost certain to give birth between now and Christmas.
Pick the correct delivery date to win a prize. Bonus points will be given for the correct sex, weight and name.

Monday Nov 20

Running 50:00 [2]
MFR Monday night run from Torgeir's box (student accommodation). It was a warm evening so eating pizza outside in his courtyard was quite pleasant. The run was pleasant too, but a little on the slow side. It was the last Monday run for Torgeir and Zoe before their Summer breaks in Norway and Adelaide. Blair had just returned from Canada in the morning, and Dion and Kirsten were also there.

Sunday Nov 19

Event: The Olympic Dream

Event: VOA Presentation's

Orienteering 20:00 [4]
End of Year presentations at Hanging Rock.
Scatter event on a fairly simple map, but there was good competition from Jymbo and Scammell. I waited for Jymbo to make a small mistake about 10 minutes in and then put the pressure on. Jymbo came back but couldn't quite catch me and I won by a second or two. Scammell chose a different route late in the course and lost a minute or two.
Orienteering 3:00 [4]
Fun relay. String course, Maze course, control picking. The hardest part was getting to the first control ahead of 30 others in a mass start, when the first control was only 20m away! After that I pulled out a comfortable 30s lead on a 3 minute course.
Helen Alexander was my partner and we finished 5th in the relay.
C • String Course 5
Orienteering warm up/down 30:00 [2]

Saturday Nov 18

Running long 2:00:00 [2]
Long run around Yarra Bend. I ran with Dion for 90 minutes around some of the single tracks.

Friday Nov 17

Running 1:00:00 [3]
2 laps of tan. A lovely day for a run today in the sunshine. I managed to avoid the protesters for the G20 summit at the Hyatt.

Thursday Nov 16

Running 51:00 [3]
2 laps of the Botanical with some surges. There was even a little sunshine at times today.
Orienteering tempo (Street O) 37:00 [4] * 9 km (4:07 / km)
spiked:17/18c
Street O at Bundoora.
Darebin Creek was flooded so the creek crossings were at bit hit or miss. Unfortunately, the crossing points that I chose were from the 'miss' category, which forced me to cross the strong flowing creek above my knees on two occasions, where the map said there were dry crossing points.
I ran strongly, but lost 2 minutes looking for a control described as 'tree near rock' in an area where there were about 200 trees and 20 rocks. This would have been ok if the control was where it was marked on the map. However it was misplaced by about 60m. It felt just like rogaining!

Wednesday Nov 15

Note
With weather like this I decided to stay inside at lunchtime today.
Melbourne, Australia
Light Rain Shower

Running race 1:21 [5] 0.5 km (2:42 / km)
2006 Tan Relay
6 x 500m + 830m
5 teams contested this year's race, with my team "Melbourne Midday Milers 1" coming third in 10.17 (5 seconds outside of Mottram's record).
I ran 1m21s from 2km to 2.5km, and then a 1000m tempo run immediately afterward to see the finish.

Other results
Sandringham Athletics Club 9.57
NAB 9.58
MMM1 10.17
MMM2 10.50
MMM3 11.14
Running intervals 20:00 [4]
1000m tempo, then 1 lap of the tan 500m on, 500m off.
Running warm up/down 40:00 [2]

Monday Nov 13

Running 52:00 [2]
MFR run from Jasmine's house in Parkville.
Ran with Torgeir, Nicola, Dion, Keith, Kirsten, Sophie, Ilka and Stuart. Pace was very slow. It was actually hard to run that slow at times - I think a few of the students have just been studying lately (understandably).
We checked out the Commonwealth Games village that is now a new housing development.
We came back via Melbourne Uni, but I stayed oustide to avoid breaching the embargo for the upcoming Vic Sprint Champs.
C • Embargo 2

Sunday Nov 12

Running long 2:09:00 [2]
Long Run via Capital City rail trail, Princess Park, lap of the Zoo, Exhibition Gardens, Fitzroy Gardens, Abbotsford, then back along the Yarra to the Fairfield Boathouse, and then finishing at home.

I took Mason to the MCG in the afternoon to watch Ricky Ponting play for Tasmania against Victoria. He only lasted 2 overs, so we spent an hour or so climbing up and down steps in the new Olympic stand to see how high we could go!
C • Good work 1

Saturday Nov 11

Running 45:00 [2]
Felt really sluggish today (after a few hard days), so I took it really easy. I even stopped and watched a couple of overs of cricket in Yarra Bend Park.

It was Torren's 2nd Birthday today, so I had a slice of chocolate cake to celebrate.

Friday Nov 10

Running intervals 26:00 [4]
Ganly Session
500m 1.46 (1.45 recovery)
800m 2.37 (1.51)
1000m 3.25 (2.05)
1000m 3.13 (2.12)
800m 2.45 (1.45)
500m 1.39
A tough day after a hard week. I enjoyed the recoveries.
I saw Liggo jogging in the opposite direction during one of my reps. Why don't you join me next time?
Running warm up/down 30:00 [2]

Thursday Nov 9

Orienteering tempo (Street O) 36:00 [4] *
spiked:17/18c
Street O at Westerforlds Park.
I ran at a good pace and won A course by 4 minutes from the Birdman. Dion was another 4 minutes back. I was a bit unsure with my route choice early on, but it turned out to be pretty good.
Running warm up/down 10:00 [1]

Wednesday Nov 8

Note
Happy Birthday to me. I'm officially an M32 today!

Running race (Corporate Cup) 12:45 [5] 3.85 km (3:19 / km) +50m 3:07 / km vdot: 60.7
Corporate Cup Final - Spring 2006
Great conditions. 15^, cool with light breeze only.
12m45s - best time since April 2003, and just 4 seconds from my all time PB. Quite a good birthday present.

The 12 under 12 match race was in fact a 30 under 14 this year. I joined the match race to help push me along to a good time.
Many of the runners went crazy to start and ran around 90s for the first 500m, but I kept it under control, and passed most of these guys up Anderson St hill. I went out a little harder than 2 weeks ago and was about 10 seconds up at 2km. I then came home even stronger than a fortnight ago and only just missed my PB, although with 1km to go, I reaslised it was going to be just out of reach.
I think the hard training in August and September set me up well, and a couple of easier weeks lately were good to freshen me up for a short hard race.

Running warm up/down 35:00 [2]
Quite slow on the warm down after eating a bbq sausage after the race. I'd tried to run hard after eating sausages before and had regretted it!

Tuesday Nov 7

Running 45:00 [2]
Bellbird Dell run. Nothing special - just a jog in the morning on the south side of the river.
It was bloody freezing today. As it was a public holiday, I was going to have bbq with the kids at the playground for lunch, but it was too cold, so we stayed at home and watch the horses on tv.

Monday Nov 6

Running 50:00 [2]
Easy run at lunchtime to Fawkner Park.
Apparently there is no MFR club run tonight because of a horse race tomorrow called the Melbourne Cup. I'm not sure why that matters?

Sunday Nov 5

Running long 2:00:00 [2]
First long run of the summer. Ran to Princes Park and Melbourne Zoo, mostly along parks and bike trails.
Came back to the zoo later in the day with the kids at a more leisurely pace. The giraffes, leopards and pumas were particularly good today as they were right up close to the fence. Clever Mason was quite happy to put Torren between him and the emu in the walk thorugh enclosure.

Saturday Nov 4

Running 1:10:00 [2]
Felt a bit tired, so took it pretty easy for the first half. Ran on the south side of the river to Studley Park boathouse, and then returned along Merri Creek.

Friday Nov 3

Running 54:00 [3]
Albert Park Lake via the tan track.
Quite a solid pace today for what was supposed to be an easier run.
Why do you always get a headwind in every direction when you run around Albert Park?

Thursday Nov 2

Orienteering tempo (Street O) 40:30 [4] *
spiked:18/18c
Street O at Viewbank. My first one for this summer series.
A complex course, and I'm still not sure if I went the optimal way to collect 18 out of 20 controls. Felt like I was moving ok and got up the hills well. I was a bit disappointed that there were no packs to run with as I was solo for the entire race.
Dion had a shocker and was 9 minutes behind. Tony Bird seems to be in reasonable shape this season.
Running warm up/down 5:00 [1]
C • Tony Bird 3

Wednesday Nov 1

Running 55:00 [3]
Glorious day in Melbourne at lunchtime.
2 laps of the tan in reverse. Pace increased to around 16mins on the second lap after an easier 17 min first lap.
