Orienteering race 1:28:34 [5] **** 14.6 km (6:04 / km) +301m 5:30 / km
spiked:25/25c

Victorian Long Distance Championships
M21E 2nd place
26 seconds behind Kerrin Rattray

I was very pleased with the result as I did not expect to be this close to the win. This was perhaps my best orienteering race for several years.
Technically I was pretty close to perfect, and I was able to run hard on the route choice legs and take time out of most of the field. Kerrin was just faster than me in the forest legs.

I formed a train after catching Simon Rouse at 5, Ben Goonan at 11, and David Brownridge at 12. They held on to me until the 14, and then the butterfly enabled David and I to break clear. In fact, I was able to put 7 minutes into Simon and Ben until the end.
I had a gel at 21 at the end of the butterfly and then pushed really hard for the last 4kms, taking road route choices where possible.

Anne was the event organiser, so that meant that I had to also do a fair bit of organising and setting things up. The main problem was the weather, which was out of our control. The creeks were all flooded mid week and the landowners didn't want 100 cars using their access road.
Otherwise, the event seemed to go very well, and I was happy with all aspects of it.
