Very happy with 5th place in a hot field.
It was a technical sand dune map, but much flatter than Qualifying #2. I pushed quite hard, and navigated safely through the complex controls, escaping with just a couple of 30 second errors. According to WinSplits this was the equal lowest on the course, and one of the lower time losses on all courses. I had to be satisfied with that effort, especially when I have only ever run on a handful of sand dune maps, and was competing against NZ and Scandinavians who have grown up on them.

I increased my pace when Muukkonen caught me near 15. I tried hard to stay with him. I pushed hard up the hill to 19, but he was too strong for me and as I recovered from the hill, he powered away on leg 20 into the distance. I was exhausted for the next 3 or 4 controls, but I finished off ok without any major errors.

Walk 2:00:00 [1] 10.0 km (12:00 / km)

Trip to Rangitoto Island/Volcano in Auckland Harbour.
This was more than I wanted to do on my "rest" day, but it filled in the day and was quite a nice trip with Jenny, John and Blair.
Lots of walking though. When on holiday, it is always a compromise between an ideal preparation for racing, and being a tourist.
