State Series 6
Lockwood Range
Long Distance - Course 1
The first real long distance course in Victoria for 2017. A fun area. I always enjoy the experience of a new map and new terrain. This introduced some unique navigational challenges, particularly compass skills across long flat areas. Some I handled ok, others not so well.
I lost concentration a couple of times at the end of long legs to 4 and 9, and lost direction, leading to 2 minute mistakes each time.
I was slightly right on 10, and looked right instead of left, missing the control tucked into a small eroded watercourse.
I started early at 9am so that I could return home for Torren's footy game. Thanks Neil! This turned out well. The only issue was finding control #2 on the ground (presumably due to wind) and having to pick it up and insert it into the ground.
I got soaking wet near #13, and spent the last 20 minutes in cold pouring rain.
I didn't have a lot of speed today. I think the Night Champs took a bit out of me the previous evening. I also haven't raced a 95 min long distance race since the Vic Champs last September (remarkably 11 months ago).
