2022 Australian Championships Relay
Campbells Creek
M21E first leg in 2nd Vic team

After a very big week, I had no legs left today.
I kept up with the tail of the front pack until the 4th control. Then I really started to feel the climbs.
I finished where I expected to on the first leg, but I was very tired.

I lost about 2 mins at 15. I feel confident that the control was placed too high, especially since it was described as the lower part of the ditch, and I was looking in the lower part of the ditch. GPS track also confirms this.

Placements of control 5 and 10 also appeared to be dodgy.

Good fun, but one race too many for me for the week.

2022 Australian Championships Long Distance
Nuggety Range
M45A
2nd place, 25 seconds behind Rob Walter.
A couple of small mistakes, but happy that I got the most physically out of myself on the day that I possibly could given my injury interrupted preparation in August.

Great to have a new map and another quality area within driving distance of Melbourne. Thank you to all involved.

The event would have been even better if...
#1 Water shall be placed at control points. It is very clear in the rules. The rules have been written for several good reasons and need to be followed for any event, but especially an Australian Championship.
The water point between 15 and 16 was misplaced by a significant amount. Although this did not cause me any issues, it did have an impact on many competitors.

#2 The map near control #2.
Unfortunately I could not see the brown earth banks under the rocky ground black screen, even with my magnifier. After zooming in on the map on my computer the map finally made sense.
I would suggest that the black screen needs to be finer or further dispersed if there is critical contour details underneath. If that is the mapping standard and cannot be changed, then I would suggest moving the control away from an area where the map is unclear.

Nice to win the Australian Championship title in my age class.
I don't think I recognised the wall on the edge of the road near 2, and ran into the trap, losing around 20 seconds.
I had to really push hard after that to make up time on Ricky. He was still well ahead, but I managed to make up 28 seconds in the last 3 or 4 minutes by working really hard.

Goldfields Challenge Day 3
Schools Relay day, but a slightly longer course than Senior Boys

Mass start with a dozen of the Course A men. I fell behind a group in the hills near 3 and 4. I navigated well and got back in front at 12. Then I lost concentration on 14 when I didn't see the dam and mistakenly thought that I had crossed to the west of it.

The vegetation in the final part of the course was a bit hit or miss. You could be lucky or unlucky, especially if you were in the relay and had a split in the thicker stuff.
