| trail run 57:59 [3] 12.43 km (4:40 / km) | ||
| Loch Raven on a warm afternoon. Very muddy. Was charged by 3 different snarling, unleased dogs in a 30 min period. Two of the owners said "He's allright, he's allright." Ahh, that explains the snarling and barking. These bastards are like broken records. And when I stop to walk do they grab the animal and hook up the leash they are carrying? Hell no. The nice weather brings out all the fuckers. Thats one nice thing about running in crappy weather. Even the dogs refuse to go out. | ||

| Interesting day at work today. I put out a fire in an ash bin on the 4th floor balcony with a fire extinguisher. My office looks out across this patio and there are concrete ash bins on each end. The one on the far end had a plume of smoke coming out, so I went to have a look. It was smoking heavily but I couldn't see to the bottom. I grabbed the metal ashtray from the other bin (the burning one was missing its metal tray). Put the tray on top to snuf the fire, but there was a crack near the bottom too. So I went inside and got an extinguisher from the hall, flipped the metal tray back off and smote it. I smote it good. :) Then noticed that the concrete side had broken out from the heat and dumped smolering butts all over the patio tile. The tiles just sit on top of the tarred roof, so this seemed like a bad thing. I fired the extinguisher into the hole at the bottom a few times. All of this made a huge cloud of smoke and dust on the patio. Lots of offices look out on this patio, but no one seemed to notice what was going on. Maybe I'm the only one who looks out the window at work :) So after it was out I headed back in to call facilities and just then the librarian appeared with the crew, who had been getting reports of people smelling smoke. They got a bucket of water to completely douse it, and they took away the broken ash bin. The fire was caused by a burning cigarette package, which someone had thrown into the bottom with the smoldering butts. Yeah, smokers are a pretty dumb lot. Actually they are addicts who don't care about anything except their next smoke. Maybe this episode of nearly burning down the building will finally get smoking banned from the 4th floor patio.
After playing fireman I promptly spilled coffee all over myself and my chair, so for the rest of the day I walked around in a stained, untucked shirt and pants, smelling like an ash tray.

Busy week at work. The AAS meeting (American Astronomical Society) is going on in D.C. and I've been working on some presentations for that. Was up all night Tues finishing one of them. Here is a PDF copy of my poster if you are interested. Its 2MB. Printed size was 46"x42", so you will have to zoom in to read it. Yesterday was our big orion nebula press release. An article appeared on CNN this morning. I spent the past several months building the mosaics that went into this picture, although someone in the art dept "photoshop"'ed the 5 filters for the release. Its quite an image. At native resolution its 36,000x32,000 pixels - equivalent to a 1.2 Gigapixel (1200 Megapixel) camera :) Follow this link to all the HST realease images:
Spike took a picture of Orion from his back yard in February. It is posted on his blog. The nebula is the middle blob in the short sword, which hangs down towards the lower right ffrom the wider, brighter 3 stars of the belt. Today is the release of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field follow-on program (UDF05). Not sure if there will be any press on that or not. Its basically an extension to the HUDF that was done a couple of years ago. I've been working on the IR data from that.
