orienteering 30:04 [4] 4.5 km (6:41 / km)
13c

Sprintish training set by Ted at new Mckeldin for the QOC Summer Series event (US Team benefit, as always). He printed 1:4000, with clue sheets to sim the WOC as closely as possible. Thanks Ted! Of course the whole thing was run in POURING rain - of the drowned rat variety. Started just after getting out of the car, ended sometime after finish, but started again for control pickup. How convenient.

orienteering 20:00 [3] 3.4 km (5:53 / km)
4c

Control pickup with Ted. Mostly a trail run, but also checked out some of the mapping in a few sections.

Note

Spent the afternoon replacing the front brake pads and rotating the tires on the car. Hot and muggy in the sun.

road run 52:09 [3] 12.35 km (4:13 / km)

Around the neighborhood in the dark. Got home too late to hit the trails like I was planning. Too bad. Climbed 675'

cycling 1:15:45 [3] 25.65 mi (2:57 / mi)

Sweet, awesome ride today. Light tailwind both directions so I could really keep the steam up the whole way.

Note

This CNN headline made me laugh. The best quote from the article is:

"Barf bags have a lot of shelf life -- people aren't barfing as much in planes as they used to."

So true. I can't remember the last time I saw someone barf on an airplane.

cycling 1:45:00 [3] 32.9 mi (3:11 / mi)

Work commute, plus a side trip on the way home to the Performance bike shop to pick up some parts for daddyo's bike. Mucho climb trying to cut west from Perring to Dulaney Valley. Made some sub-optimal turns in a subdivision seemingly built on the side of a mountain. Climbed 2800', compared to the normal 2000' of a commute in 6 miles more.

trail run 13:12 [3] 2.8 km (4:43 / km)

Run to start and back from finish with Ted at New Mckeldin.

orienteering 42:22 [4] *** 6.4 km (6:37 / km)
13c

Training course set by Ted at New Mckeldin. I gave him a 4 min head start and it took me over half the course to catch him after he ran out of gas. We were both pretty wiped out from the sprints yesterday combined with the climb today (225m, 3.5%). I missed #3, so walked back to take a look at it after finishing. Also wandered around a bit inspecting Ted's fieldchecking and the base (from Lidar). Cool front came through about 2 controls from the end, with strong wind and much cooler air. Lots of branches falling everywhere. Its not Switzerland, but at least it was orienteering.

road run 7:28 [3] 1.5 km (4:59 / km)

warm up on campus before sprints. 96F and super humid.

orienteering race 16:33 [5] *** 3.8 km (4:21 / km)
13c

UMD Sprint B. Ted, John Blaisdell, Dave, Heidi, Darcy and I ran a couple of sprints that were originally run back in May. I think only Dave and Heidi had run these before. No controls or streamers out. This was great fun, but it was a sweaty operation. Ran these as fast as I could manage, with about 20 mins rest between them. Course length: 3.2 km.

orienteering race 14:14 [5] *** 3.25 km (4:23 / km)
13c

UMD Sprint A. Second sprint of the afternoon. Cleaner in this one. Course length was 3.0km. Thanks to John Blaisdell for setting these courses. I finally got to see the Kermit and Jim Henson statue bench, which was the GO control on this course.

orienteering race 1:01:00 [4] 10.5 km (5:49 / km)
20c

Daniel Boone "Spell-O." Modified score-O all on trails (forced, by definition). Some trickey overgrown trail junctions. A suprisingly useful exercise. E-punch. No warm up :( Very very hot and humid out all day.

orienteering 8:45 [1]

Planning route for spell-O, on the clock. Had to choose controls that spelled the words "DANIEL BOONE HOMESTEAD" in order and use no more than two of each particular letter from controls on either side of the map. Not allowed to go through any shade of green on the map (which is *all* of the forest at Daniel Boone), although some of the trails could pass as thick, briery undergrowth.

orienteering 40:57 [3] *** 5.0 km (8:11 / km)
10c

Controls, stands and water pickup at Daniel Boone. Very hot out.
