Event: Mt Billy

11 AM

Orienteering 1:27:52 [4] *** 13.16 km (6:41 / km) +321m 5:57 / km
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talon 212

H1 at Mt Billy, 11.9km straight line.
Heart bad, course tough and repetitive, bush much thicker than mapped = not much fun. Some nice sections but with my heart playing up on the horrible first leg through head high green where mapped as white with small patches of green stripe I wasn't in the mood to appreciate the nice bits.
Really wanted to give up after the first loop but couldn't make myself do it so kept going running the flatter sections and walking a lot of the hills. A couple of little mistakes but probably less than a minute in total.
Wished I had taken the kids to the playground while Rachel did her race at Joondalup.

Running tempo 1:15:55 intensity: (5:55 @2) + (10:00 @3) + (1:00:00 @4) 17.19 km (4:25 / km) +71m 4:20 / km

Attempted the session I have been putting off since Sunday but I think I should have put it off a bit longer. Warm up down to the river then an hour at marathon pace out to Tawarri and back plus a loop around the roads in KP.

A few hiccups from the heart 5min into the warm up but seemed to have settled down again when I started. Started out at what felt like the right sort of effort then checked the pace after a minute or two and saw 4:29/km. I wanted to start conservatively but I really hoped 4:10 would feel conservative.

Maybe just need to warm up more, try to stay relaxed and check again after about 2k, 4:24. Noticing now that I'm worried about tripping over every join in the cycle path which doesn't seem like a good sign. Ran on the road coming back to avoid tripping and the pace is picking up slowly but by 30 minutes I'm starting to tire and my calves are tightening up.

Pace is down to 4:18 by the time I enter KP but I've decided I should give it up and take the shortest route home. Turned up Park Rd just to see what it feels like when tired then planned to go left back to Zamia cafe and home. Feeling a little better after the downhill so I made a last second decision to go right and complete the session.

Calves still getting tighter but apart from that I handled the hills ok and was improving on the flats. I was thinking that while struggling up this hill in the marathon I'll be able to look back and think at least I feel better than during that training run in July.

Saw Terry up ahead crossing the top of the hill on his way to Hale oval but didn't manage to attract his attention. Didn't quite manage to get the average down to 3 hour pace by the end but I probably did do the overall uphill section through KP at sub 3 pace so not a complete failure.

Warm down was about 800m in 4 minutes.

Running 33:00 [2]
shoes: Nike Lunar Glide

Easy run in KP. One brief heart flutter early in the run.

Had planned a harder run on Sunday then decided to put it off until Tuesday but didn't really feel up to it so put it off again.
Maybe tomorrow.
