Orienteering race 1:36:11 [4] 14.43 km (6:40 / km) +392m 5:52 / km
shoes: Puma Faas 250 Trail

WA Long Champs at Nganga.
Tried to convince myself I had some chance in this race too but I don't think I ever really believed it despite getting quite close to Henry and Tomas consistently over the last few weeks.

Expected to see Bryce leaving 1 as I approached but never saw him so I assumed he missed it. Had a lot of trouble choosing a route to 2, kind of decided I wasted to go left and approach from the clearing above it but didn't really commit to it and didn't climb enough early so switched to the right hand route contouring in which I did ok but probably could have done better if I committed to it from the beginning. Already feeling pretty tired by 3 and couldn't even contemplate doing the climb at the start of the right hand route to 4 so just looked to minimise climb contouring around to the left. Didn't get the best line going a bit high back near 1 and then had trouble at the end because half the features in the circle had rubbed off my map.

Bounced off the rock surface behind 5 and a bit hesitant into 7 but generally happy with how I was going until Henry came past me when I overshot 10 slightly. Checked my watch and was quite demoralised to see had made up 6 minutes in less time than yesterday's race when I was happy with how I had been going. Could still see Henry at 11 but by 12 he was long gone along with most of my motivation to keep pushing.

Just going through the motions really for the rest of the course. Knew Steve was still in front because I saw his map at the map change and thought we might be pretty close but it didn't really spur me on much. Got a bit of a lift when I caught Ivan at 16 and we took different routes to 17. Found out later that my different route worried him enough to make him go back and check the code on 16.

Went ok through to 22 but I was getting pretty lazy with the navigation. I noted that 23 was a dangerous control and thought I should have a strategy to make it safer but didn't actually put any thought into what that strategy should be and just ran roughly South. Went past the control on the cliff on the creek halfway and made sure I knew where I was crossing the track but it wasn't really where I wanted to be. Tried to be more careful with compass from here but I stopped short when I hit a flat area and other runners were crossing my path. Went right first and then left but couldn't make sense of it because I was well short of where I thought I was. Should have just stayed on compass until I hit the actual creek. Eventually spotted the control on the bank on the South side and worked it out from there but lost about 4 minutes all up.

Given up on beating Steve as well now and really feeling a bit embarrassed with my effort which I just wanted to be over. Really didn't want to do the final loop past the finish but at least it was very flat so was over pretty quickly.

Not feeling very inclined to do any more long races at my current fitness level and I don't feel very inclined to train for long races so I might try to stick to middle distance and shorter from now on.

Maybe...

Not making any promises.

Orienteering 21:42 [1] 2.29 km (9:29 / km) +43m 8:40 / km
shoes: Puma Faas 250 Trail

Finished my course and went straight into shadowing Liam around the M10 course. I tried to stay well behind and never even looked at the map but I did carry descriptions and had to point out that he was supposed to be following tapes when he looked like running the wrong way out of number 5. Kept up a steady jog most of the way and hit 3:48/km heading for the finish.

Orienteering race 38:49 intensity: (10 @1) + (7 @2) + (8 @3) + (9:25 @4) + (28:59 @5) 5.58 km (6:57 / km) +188m 5:57 / km
ahr:163 max:214 shoes: Inov-8 X-Talon 212

WA Middle Champs at Little Nganga. Thought this was going to be my best chance of being competitive as I just don't have the fitness to be competitive in a long race now. I think this may have made me a bit nervous because my heart was all over the place from about 10am. Heart rate hit 170 standing in the start grid but I tried to just ignore it and do the best I could anyway.

Didn't feel I had good map contact across the flat hilltop to 1 but tried hard to stay on compass and hit it well. Confident into 2 choosing to go below the rocks as it looked faster but it was high in the gully so lost a few seconds. I think 2 being a bit high threw me off a bit heading to 3 but I recognised the oval boulder and got it ok. Happy with 4 but got my exit direction from 4 a bit wrong and ran much wider left than I wanted to across to 5. I knew where I was but I had intended to run back past 1 and probably lost 10 seconds or more by running wide. 6 was ok but 7 I ran a little low and then went down to check the boulder below even though I was pretty sure of what it was, stupid really and probably cost me an extra 20 seconds. 8 looked easy but was very hard to see. Had a moment of panic but actually found it pretty quickly and had the fastest split.

A couple of longer legs with a bit of gentle climb across to 9 and 10 had me struggling physically and mentally as I imagined Henry and Tomas running away from me. Still felt every control had potential for a big mistake so didn't give up all hope. Got 11 and 12 ok then wasted a bit of time at 13 standing next to the boulder on the edge of the clearing thinking I should be able to see it. Once I dared to move I found it no problem.

Left 13 uphill but dropped to find better running and misinterpreted some rocks to hit the spur much lower than I thought. Chose the right direction but was quite slow about it losing about a minute and with that nearly all hope of winning. Tried to keep pushing to the end and hit 15 and 16 ok but I was having trouble concentrating and it cost me over the last few controls with a number of little wobbles and hesitations which probably cost another minute all up.

Finished up 3rd only a minute behind Tomas and 2:42 behind Henry which was better than I expected but still a bit disappointing as I felt it was a missed opportunity.

Running 45:20 [3] 9.11 km (4:59 / km) +100m 4:43 / km
shoes: Puma Faas 300 Black

Usual lap of KP after work with Ivan. First time we have done it together in quite a while with Ivan injuring his foot and then me doing the rogaine. A bit surprised how easy it felt actually. I had been feeling pretty good all day and ran pretty hard to go home for lunch too. Kept a nice steady pace and just chatted all the way until an old guy on and Indi 500 rode through the underpass just ahead of us at the end and I was feeling good enough that I couldn't resist going with him. Felt pretty good striding out for a while and felt as though I still had another gear or two. Good confidence booster.
