WA Long Champs at Malmalling East.
Nowhere near up to this in my rehab plan but I wasn't really interested in running M45 and the foot has been feeling pretty good so I thought I'd just tape the foot up and hope for the best. I knew I wasn't fit enough to run all the way and I've been feeling as though the foot gets worse when I get tired so I planned to try to take it easy from the start and walk any time it was feeling a bit hard.
Simple first leg followed by the longest leg of the course with a big climb. Straightish looked ok and I wanted to approach from the right so aimed to get up the hill a bit early and run around the right hand side of the ridge. Lost direction a bit through the lower vis stuff at the top of the hill but I don't think it cost me too much. Tim was just leaving 2 as I approached (3min) and I passed him on the way to 3. Rushed a bit leaving 3 and didn't climb the hill as much as I wanted to so ran through more rocks than I should have. Came out on the track at the top just ahead of Tim so I didn't think it mattered too much but I had a much bigger gap on him at 3 than I realised so I think I actually did lose a bit of time there and missed a chance to get clear. Tim was right behind at 5, 6 and 7 but I think he decided he should do his own thing after that and I didn't see him again. Drifted a little left on the way to 8 in search of better running but that also encouraged me to stay high longer and approach what seemed a dangerous control the safe way coming down the spur.
Flipped the map and started on a second lap which felt quite similar to the first. Bumbled around a little coming into 11 and noticed I was feeling tired so consciously decided to keep things simple and be happy to walk in and out of controls from there. Stopped for a little while just short of 13 expecting to be able to see it below me before taking another step and seeing it to my left. Slow up the climb to 14 but still feeling ok running along the flat track at the top. Just slightly off to the left on the final approach to 15 and made a little mistake on the last control going in off the track a bit early. I had been checking the time back near 14 and thought I was going to be well over 90 minutes so was quite pleased to see I had snuck in just under. I had been thinking it felt like a tough course so thought a few would abandon but nobody did with Liam punching a wrong second last control the only casualty of the 9 starters.
Ended up 14 minutes clear of Hadrien with almost all of that coming in the first half. Didn't notice the foot much at all and didn't notice any change from the start to the finish. Feeling it a bit more walking around in the afternoon but nothing too bad.
I think that makes 21.
