At first thought this race went pretty bad and was dissapointed, however on further reflection moving away from the emotional analysis, it wasn't all that bad.
Navigation was a tiny bit sloppy approaching the control for about the first 5, but then settled into it and was pretty much nailing them. Can't have lost more than a minute on that. Really pleased with my route choice on the long leg, had noticed it in a while in advance so had time to contemplate the best route and one which avoided the most hills. This ended up being the fastest.
Physically it was some what a different story... I would like to put it down to being cautious with my ankles, however I think the bigger contributer was my lack of fitness/motivation on the hills. Tried to resolve the latter when I spotted John in the distance but this was short lived when we chose different routes and I ended up ahead of him. Didn't see him again.
Any speed I did have on the hills quickly evaporated and didn't feel much more than a crawl at the end.
I suppose I should take the positive about my technique and considering I have been injured, have a cold, and not much sleep, this is a good start to the season and something to build on.
