GOC Long - 9th place. Terrible run. Didn't start out badly, but a bad mistake at #5 (no plan) and a long one at #10 (no plan) hurt. Couldn't find the clearing at #18 & became frustrated. Again it was down to not having a safe plan. In retrospect I was implementing 1D orienteering, trying to run straight to everything & judging distance, running green the whole time. So two things happened, (1) working too hard physically meant that I didn't have enough mental alertness to navigate so that (2) when things went wrong it took me a long time to relocate.
Often there were far more secure routes that should have been taken.
By #24 I was physically exhausted & was reduced to a shuffle....

O Race race (Sprint) 25:20 [5] 3.2 km (7:55 / km)

Frustrating SA Sprint race. Finished 3rd. Head wasn't there. I never adapted to the terrain, which felt more like Middle than sprint. Made too many mistakes all round the course as I constantly tried to go faster than the terrain dictated, with the result that I made too many mistakes.

O Race race (Middle) 41:09 [5] 4.8 km (8:34 / km)
max:184 shoes: Inov8 Roclite 285

GOC Middle - 2nd place. Another bad start as I screwed up #1. Same problem as last year in that I tried the high-risk, straight route on the first leg. Lost 3:30 on that leg. Alex caught me at #2 then we proceded to have a tussle over the remainder of the course. If one of us pulled ahead it would invariably be followed by a mistake that allowed the other to catch up.
It was orienteering at a pace that was uncomfortable. The biggest mistake was at #14 (i'm not convinced this was in the right place), but that wasn't enough to affect the result.
