Orienteering race 48:30 [3] *** 6.0 km (8:05 / km)
spiked:4/5c

Dryer Road - Green - Unofficial since I had seen the map and checked about half the controls for Dick. Even so, I seemed to flow pretty easily though the ones I hadn't seen. Had a bit of a problem at #12 - searched around a bit near some flagging that was obviously (to me now at least) not near the control. The biggest problem for me was the hills. I seemed to need to take a greater # of walking steps than normal, but then again some of the hills were steep.

I think the park and the map were well received. The park was great for the kids with the playground and the mtn biking skills course to ride around on. We had to tear the kids away when it was time to leave. The weather also helped with the turnout

Orienteering race 43:36 [4] *** 4.5 km (9:41 / km)
spiked:14/17c shoes: Mudclaw O+340

US Relay Champs - Osbornedale Park - Green Leg 3 - Adrenaline was really elevated for this event - especially after seeing who was running the 3rd leg on other teams. However, I still felt reasonably calm in the handoff area, even knowing Wyatt and Ross (among some other fast runners) were behind me. Mike and Nate ran great legs and had us in good position.

After getting the handoff from Mike it was straight into the woods and up the hill. The second leg was long which turned out to be good for me since I was not forced to make quick decisions and eased my way into the scale and the terrain. Wyatt caught me mid leg and we traded off on a couple of legs leading each other in. He separated from me on the way to #6 because my legs couldn't handle going up and over the ridge and I also had some nav. problems. I drifted too far left and down the hill before realizing my mistake. It was really the only major mistake I made and was for about 3:00 min.

Continued to run well through the spectator control (in 3rd!) but was passed by Ross and then Dylan Thies when I had a bit of a bobble on #15. Finished about 90 seconds behind Ross and 20 seconds behind Dylan, setting 'ROC Solid' in 4th. Overall I was happy with my run (ran the leg 5th fastest) and had a great time the entire weekend.

Orienteering race 15:09 [5] *** 2.2 km (6:53 / km)
spiked:13/15c shoes: Mudclaw O+340

Cranbury Park A-Meet - Sprint A - Probably my best race of the weekend. It helped that it was the first and I was not fatigued. Really only had navigational problems with the 1st control, then a physical problem with a turned ankle and a fall into a shallow pit right as I was punching at #2. I maybe would have picked up 45 seconds in an ideal race - 46 if I had been allowed to punch after falling down ;-)

Note: I turned the ankle two more times during the weekend - which I think can be attributed to the shoes. I wore the Mudclaws, which are cut pretty low, for all 4 races. They don't have a lot of miles, and lost a couple studs. So maybe I can keep them for less demanding trail running and start looking for next seasons shoes....

Orienteering race 17:57 [5] *** 2.3 km (7:48 / km)
spiked:10/13c shoes: Mudclaw O+340

Cranbury Park A-Meet - Sprint B - This was definitely my worst race and I can't chalk it up to fatigue. I had promblems at #1 and #5. #1 was along the swamp and although I crossed the trails knowing where I was, I could not locate the control. I messed up #5 by taking a bad line over the ridge from #4 and getting confused with the trail network.

Orienteering race 18:19 [4] *** 3.2 km (5:43 / km)
spiked:18/21c shoes: Mudclaw O+340

Cranbury Park - A-meet - Finals sprint. I was tired and had a bad nav error on my second control. I was following a crowd and at the second control on the loop was not sure I was on the right loop. Thankfully it was a sprint and over in under 20 minutes!

Walking 30:00 [3] 2.2 mi (13:38 / mi)

lunchtime walk

Running 53:20 [3] 6.6 mi (8:05 / mi)
shoes: PI - SyncroFloat

I was getting tired of my normal route but realized there aren't too really good places to run after dark in Fairport. Managed a longer than normal run by hitting some neighborhood streets - but still had to incorporate the towpath section between Perinton Park and Main St.

Orienteering race 18:49 [5] *** 3.0 km (6:16 / km)
spiked:12/16c shoes: Mudclaw O+340

NOD Sprint at Highland - started pretty late and had the 'pleasure' of seeing some fast times already posted. I knew it would be runners course and that I would have trouble touching the times posted by Mike and Nate. (I usually can't get Gil and certainly can't get Will)

Had a hard time with the map to #1, but settled in quickly. #2 through #6 were all pretty straightforward. For #7 #8 and #9 I didn't do too good of a job reading the map and just went to the right area and randomly looked in the trees and bushes for the control. Took a more direct line through the woods to #13 and then followed contours to #14. Probably could have shaved a few seconds by taking a more direct line to this one. Managed a time between Nate and Mike. Actual distance covered was 3.44 km.

Turk Hill - Perinton Park loop with an extra loop. Temps were perfect for running; however, it took me a while to loosen up in the cold temps. It has been a while since I got an evening run in and it felt nice.

Orienteering (Course Setting) 1:40:00 [3] 6.5 mi (15:23 / mi)

Powder Mills - Got out early to set controls - about 6:30 - but as soon as I stepped out of the car, there was a flash, a boom, and then a downpour. I waited about 15 minutes for the heaviest stuff to pass but it was still raining a bit and everything was soaked I should have had my contacts in and spikes on for the effort. I did manage to bring a map bag. Didn't get everything out before having to head home to get ready for Tyler's soccer games. Finished up right before the meet

Note

Post Mortem - Well I received some good feedback on the map and where it could be improved and I bagged one control (from what I heard) - #4 on the red course was on the wrong rootstock. It was in an area of several marginally small rootstocks that I just took off the map. And, unfortunately, it was the only control that was on 3 different courses. Kameron was probably my harshest critic - pointing out that it was probably a bit hard for a Yellow Course (which I tend to agree with). Overall I was OK with how things went, but certainly left room for improvement.

Trail Running (Map Run) 1:10:00 [4] 5.45 mi (12:51 / mi)

Dryer Road Park - running the trails that I did not get to the other night. It seemed like there were a fair number more mountain bikers tonight.

Trail Running (Map Run) 1:24:00 [4] 6.1 mi (13:46 / mi)

Trail Running at the Spaghetti Factory..errr, Dryer Road Park. I ran with the GPS in hopes of generating a lot of 'usable' data where it is lacking on the trail network. The data generated will still need a bit of help from field checking, but in this case I think it will make the process more efficient. I can see why Dick raised the red flag on this - the trails and switchbacks are everywhere. Sometimes they were separated by only a tree. I can actually visualize the trails on the map being a nuisance rather than a help. It should be a challenge. I think it will also be a challenge to maintain this park. There we A LOT of trails. The unused ones will probably need to be abandoned and the ones that get the most use will need what maintenance they can afford.

I was totally unfamiliar with this area and was quite surprised. It will be a nice O-venue and I haven't even seen the other parks that it ties in to. It will be an even nicer venue once the leaves are completely off. (It did seem a bit green in areas).

Oh yeah, the place looks great for mountain biking too!

Orienteering (Course Setting) 1:25:00 [3] 6.05 mi (14:03 / mi)

Running/Flagging courses for next weeks meet at Powder Mills

Note

After mapping at PM this afternoon we rounded the kids up for a nice cool swim at the Hollow before having dinner out there. (Grandparents 65th wedding anniversary). I got into the pond and was helping Tyler off the dock when all of a sudden my wedding band flips off my finger into about 8 feet of water ( about 5 feet away from the dock). And of course the bottom of the pond is silty and weedy. I usually don't have problems with it but I must have been dehydrated from the running the past two days.

I throw on my daughter's dolphin goggles and give it a try but I am really too distraught to focus. I was convinced the thing sunk into the silt under its own weight. And all I could think about is all the other personal items I have seen lost in the murky depths this pond since I was a kid. So, Kameron calmly put on the goggles and goes under and finds it on the first try. I was amazed. (I think she was too). She has always been able to swim, but up until about 3 years ago she was intimidated by the water. All of her triathlon training and open water swims have really been for this moment!

The ring is now on my larger middle finger and I learned a lesson today.

Running 56:00 [2] 6.0 mi (9:20 / mi)
shoes: PI - SyncroFloat

Cobbs Lane/Perinton Park - ran a somewhat slow rate with Kameron. She always seems to train slower than me but beats me in road races at pretty much every distance. Maybe she is onto something...

Ran into Gil who was out for his second run of the day.
