Orienteering (Flag Pick-up) 45:00 intensity: (25:00 @1) + (20:00 @3)
shoes: PI Synchro Seek Trail

Cub Scout event at Piperwood - simple Score-O. We had limited time and the rain may have kept a few kids away, but it turned out to be a good event. Since most kids don't have watches I brought a horn and blasted it a few times with 2 minutes to go. I guess the fact that they universally ignored it and kept right on going for another 5 minutes before straggling in was a good thing.

Logged time consisted of 25 minutes of roaming the edges of the map making sure no one went off and then 20 minutes of collecting flags.

Orienteering (Course Setting) 45:00 [2] 3.0 km (15:00 / km)

Setting controls for a basic cub scout score-o type event at Piperwood tomorrow night.

Trail Running 15:00 [3] 1.5 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: PI Synchro Seek Trail

Spent a little bit of time running checking out the parcel of Town land immediately north of the Piperwood property. It is pretty trashy. Of the 60 acres, only about 1/2 is usable and a part of that is an open field. The marginally good area is a pine plantation that is relatively clean. The unusable area is really unusable. It is a solid blob of green.

Orienteering 49:43 [4] 6.4 km (7:46 / km)
shoes: NB N-Fuse

COO Local Meet - Ohio State Campus - Long. This was quite a long course for what seems like an obvious sprint venue, but the campus is huge and there were some long legs with good route choices. However, the control placements were consistently set as if it were a sprint - on very detailed features that weren't well mapped. Nonetheless, it was a nice diversion on our drive home at an interesting venue. (I could have done without the 85 degree temps)

Trail Running 44:00 [3] 5.2 mi (8:28 / mi)

A run that was more my pace - from Tapawingo - along the levee and then the looooong trail up the hill in Happy Hollow, finishing with a run through campus. And I stand corrected, last night was not the biggest party night. Based on what I witnessed as I ran through campus, tonight will be the biggest party night....

Hoping to hit the COO meet in Columbus on our way home tomorrow.

Running 44:00 [3] 3.8 mi (11:35 / mi)
shoes: NB N-Fuse

Obligatory Campus run while visiting my inlaws. Very slow pace as I had Kameron with me and it was her first run since her marathon last Sunday. I was OK with the pace. Didn't make it too far - just around hort. park, the intramural fields and out to the airport. There were too many students around to have a decent run in the middle of campus. Since it is Grand Prix tomorrow and one of the biggest party nights of the year, maybe tomorrow morning will be a good time to get back over there.

Running 37:00 [3] 4.32 mi (8:34 / mi)
shoes: NB N-Fuse

Late evening run in Forest Park - St. Louis. It would have been nice to get this run in earlier so it could have been longer, but it was nice to get out even for a short distance.

Turk Hill - Perinton Park loop. Felt better than I have in a long time on this run

Cycling - Trainer 45:00 [3]

First time on the trainer in a long while. It took me a while to get set up - having to deal with a flat rear tire and finding the DVD player. But in the end, my knees thanked me for a relatively low impact effort.

Running 43:00 [3] 5.0 mi (8:36 / mi)
shoes: PI Synchro Seek Trail

Distance is an estimate - mostly road with some trail - Headed out and did a quick two loops in Harts woods behind Minerva, then down the power lines to Old Post. After getting on the towpath at Ayrault I headed home.

Orienteering race 1:18:08 [5] *** 8.2 km (9:32 / km) +400m 7:40 / km
spiked:11/14c shoes: Mudclaw O+340

Flying Pig - Long - Red. Even though I my results were average, at best, for this run, I left happy, knowing that I was still moving at the end. There were a couple hills that really took me some time, but I had enough gas at the end. Navigationally, I did OK - with some problems at #6, #7, and #8. #6 was a long leg (1.7km) which I executed fine until the last 100 meters. I just overshot it a bit. After backtracking a 100m to the right reentrant, I couldn't believe I missed it the first time. I did the same with #8 - not judging the reentrants very well and overshooting by about 150 meters.

Overall, a nice weekend for me and Bryn - not even spoiled by my slow running (or the key incident).

Orienteering race 44:18 [5] *** 4.9 km (9:02 / km)
spiked:15/18c shoes: Mudclaw O+340

Flying Pig - Relay Champs - 8pt team - Green. Probably my best run of the weekend - comparing favorably to others that ran the course. After a 30 sec error on #1 (again!), settled in and caught David Onkst of QOC at about control #5. We traded the lead back and forth for a bit and chose a couple different lines, but more or less finished at the same time. OK, he pulled away at the end on the uphill finish. The entire team (Walt, Zack and Mike) put in great performances and we managed a 2nd place finish in the Championship (4th including unofficial teams)

Even though race went well, I did mange to have my biggest error of the weekend. After a nice afternoon hanging out with Bryn (and after just about everyone left) I realized my car key was gone. Normally I separate my key from my chain and hide it outside the car. Well after the race, I put my key chain and my single car key in my pocket and the single key must have come out of my pocket somewhere in the park. After about 10 minutes of sheer panic and 45 minutes of looking, I gave in and called the insurance company. After waiting for another hour, paying an amount I am too embarrassed to report even on this site, having my door taken apart and lock disassembled, and having the computer reprogrammed, I was the proud owner of a new transponder key. We did have the key FOB and could get in the car, so at least he didn't have to punch the lock out. We ate dinner at 9:30.

This marks the 3rd time I have had key problems at a meet. The other two times were only keys locked in the car - so it wasn't as difficult a fix and insurance covered the entire amount. I think I need to do something different next time. Suggestions?

Orienteering race 44:17 [4] *** 4.2 km (10:33 / km) +260m 8:03 / km
spiked:12/18c shoes: Mudclaw O+340

Flying Pig - Middle - Red - Although I was quite pleased with my finish time at first, after assessing the overall results I was less pleased.

Overall my run was navigationally clean - with only a 45 sec error at #1 (from being too eager out of the chute) and another at #3 (I felt the vegetation was mapped wrong). Otherwise my lines were good. I may have lost a few seconds here and there being a bit tentative as I approached other control circles. As far as #3, the control was definitely in the green, but only mapped on the edge. (this being my only quibble - the maps and courses were well done the entire weekend).

What hurt me was the hills. Definitely a lack of fitness......
