Running 26:30 [3] 5.2 km (5:06 / km)

Out of town on business - and I had to get in the car to get off the main highway to find a decent place to run. I wound up in 'The Hamlet of Highland on the Hudson River' and ran around the 5 or 6 streets that looked inviting. It was about 9:00PM as I was running around and I saw 3 guys either getting out of what looked like a car pool car, or dressed in business attire walking home from a bus stop. I am not sure, but it looked like they were just getting home from their commute! Highland is about 1 hour north of NY City.

Shoveling 15:00 [3]

6"

Cycling - Trainer 30:00 [3]

Had a parent-teacher conference at 10:15 so rather than driving to the west side of town, then back home again I decided to play hooky and managed to get in a short ride.

Snowshoeing 26:40 [4] 3.34 km (7:59 / km)

Kameron rented some shoes for a race this past weekend and we have them for a week - so I thought I would try them. I have heard 60% more energy is req'd to run with snowshoes since you have to pick them up so high. It is definitely more work but it varies widely depending on the snow and trail conditions. I went down behind the local school and broke some new trail in about 8 inches of powder but was on packed powder for most of the time. I thought I did just OK for my first time but I am glad I didn't run the race with her. I was wiped out after only 3km.

Shoveling 15:00 [2]

Well, I didn't have to shovel the 10" that Randy had since Kameron did some work earlier today - but it was still a decent workout.

Orienteering race (Ski-O) 2:05:00 [4] *** 13.5 km (9:16 / km)
spiked:14/14c

Mendon Ponds Ski-O - Did the Male Open course (13.5 km) against my better judgment. I hadn't been on skis in a while, I have never done a ski-o event, and I knew the the ski-o courses generally tested skiing skills/endurance more so than pure orienteering skills. Right after Dayle more or less talked me into it, Jim Russell almost scared me out of doing it with a look at the map and a look at all the gear he was going out with. I am glad I tried it and I did manage to finish - but I think was sixth out of six. Maybe somebody came in way late and their time wasn't posted yet...

Managed the course with about 10 spills. The first 5 were because I was a bit out of control at the time and the last 5 were because I was just tired. The worst ones were going into and coming out of #2 where it was all hills, the trail was not much of a trail and there were a lot of twists and turns. I probably should have been out of my skis for this control. I also went down hard coming out of #4 where I thought I could skate off on some frozen grass. But there was not enough ice and I wound up on my face. No lingering injuries though....

The trails were decent overall with some pretty marginal spots around the northern ponds. The south end of the course was on some trails in great condition but I think I was too tired to enjoy them.

GPS said I covered 14.3 km - which is pretty close to the published 13.5km map.

XC Skiing 25:00 [3]

I figured I had better some some skis on before the Mendon Ponds event tomorrow - considering I have not had them on in almost 2 years. Managed a short loop at the Hollow after taking the kids sledding. Kameron and other family members were out a bit earlier and had made trail so the going was not too bad. It felt like I could still ski, but I tired quickly.

Cycling - Trainer 30:00 [3]

Felt like I needed to get some activity in this evening but everything at home got pushed back pretty late - so my only (reasonable) option was the trainer.

Finally got a workout in (albeit a short one) after another unplanned layoff.

Mapping 1:25:00 [1] 4.1 km (20:44 / km)

Mapping - Powder Mills - Ran into 2 ROC members and another person who knew the lingo and asked me if I was setting a course. Ran into another group last week who seemed to know what I was up to as well. Stayed on the main ridge for the most part and stayed away from any wet trails. It seemed to get dark awfully quickly tonight....

Trail Running 50:10 [4] 8.06 km (6:13 / km)

Crescent Trail - on either side of Garnsey. After reading Randy's log I though I would stay away from Powder Mills and look for some *dry* trails elsewhere. Well it was hit and miss for me. On the north side of Garnsey I couldn't wait to get back to pavement and on the south side it wasn't too bad (a part of the run being on the golf course at Woodcliff helped).

Cycling - Trainer 40:00 [3]

Ughh. Was hoping to get a workout yesterday so I wouldn't feel to bad about taking a rest day today - but it didn't work out that way and the guilt factor kicked in.

Orienteering (Mapping) 1:10:00 [1] 3.75 km (18:40 / km)

Finished off linear features in the south end of Powder Mills

Cycling - Trainer 30:00 [3]

Well, I figured there was no sense in going back to work well rested and fit in one more workout before returning to a more regular schedule. Tomorrow will definitely be a rest day. After that I will need to work to keep up the activity level.
