Mendon Ponds Ski-O - Did the Male Open course (13.5 km) against my better judgment. I hadn't been on skis in a while, I have never done a ski-o event, and I knew the the ski-o courses generally tested skiing skills/endurance more so than pure orienteering skills. Right after Dayle more or less talked me into it, Jim Russell almost scared me out of doing it with a look at the map and a look at all the gear he was going out with. I am glad I tried it and I did manage to finish - but I think was sixth out of six. Maybe somebody came in way late and their time wasn't posted yet...
Managed the course with about 10 spills. The first 5 were because I was a bit out of control at the time and the last 5 were because I was just tired. The worst ones were going into and coming out of #2 where it was all hills, the trail was not much of a trail and there were a lot of twists and turns. I probably should have been out of my skis for this control. I also went down hard coming out of #4 where I thought I could skate off on some frozen grass. But there was not enough ice and I wound up on my face. No lingering injuries though....
The trails were decent overall with some pretty marginal spots around the northern ponds. The south end of the course was on some trails in great condition but I think I was too tired to enjoy them.
GPS said I covered 14.3 km - which is pretty close to the published 13.5km map.
