Note

Chase Corp Challenge

Running race 26:26 [4] 3.5 mi (7:33 / mi)

Chase Corp. Challenge - Big crowds and a lot of slower runners starting in the front of the pack forced me off the pavement for the first half mile. Felt pretty good at the end, so I must have left something on the table.

Running 33:20 [3] 3.9 mi (8:33 / mi)

Turk Hill - Perinton Park loop with some modifications. Tried to take it easy as my feet were a bit sore from yesterday. Leg muscles were OK though.

Orienteering race (Sprint) 14:15 [4] *** 2.2 km (6:29 / km)
spiked:7/8c

ROC Webster - Sprint - felt OK after running the Orange and felt pretty good during the run. I took a couple questionable lines and had one error. Coming out of #6 I went through some green area to catch a trail and then needed to find a junction on that trail. I didn't aim off far enough (or at all), wound up on the wrong side of the junction and headed the wrong way. Lost 40 seconds.

Didn't quite feel up to running the yellow.

Orienteering race 43:42 [4] *** 5.5 km (7:57 / km)
spiked:17/19c

ROC - Webster - Orange. Pretty much an ideal day for running - overcast w/o rain, and comfortable temps. Wore pants and gaiters for the nasty greens of Webster Park. Overall a good run with no big booms and only a bit of time lost on #8. I left a side trail too early and wound up too far down a big re-entrant and spent some time looking for the flag. I also left #10 180 degrees off, but was caught by a road, stayed with the road most of the way to the control, and probably didn't lose more than a few seconds. Met up with Nate at #13/#14 and did my best to stay with him. It was mostly trail and open running the rest of the way out and he was moving fast. It was a help for me because I don't think I would have put that much into it otherwise.

Even though there was a high density of controls there were still some pretty good route choices (swamps and green areas vs. trails). I know others took different routes than I did, but I am not sure of the impact of those choices yet.

Actual distance run - 6.3 km

Running 31:12 [3] 3.6 mi (8:40 / mi)

Almost too hot to run, but took the afternoon off and had to make some use of it. Down Cobbs Lane and back along the towpath. The only bad thing about the run was no working water fountains at the lift bridge.

Walking 45:00 [1] 2.2 mi (20:27 / mi)

Lunchtime walk - slow pace - just needed to get out

Mapping 2:20:00 [1]

Powder Mills - mostly west side - around Camp Arrowhead. Seemed to make a lot of changes to the map today. One big one will be about a 300-400m section of Irondequoit Creek getting cut off. The oxbow is starting to form with the upstream end dry and the downstream end getting some backwater. It looks like the downstream end is starting to silt up and should be cut off soon. That is if someone doesn't come back in and fill in the cut-off.

Elliptical 30:00 [3]

Running 25:45 [3] 3.4 mi (7:34 / mi)

Turk Hill Road - Perinton Park Loop. I have gotten out of the habit of running - mostly since my feet were in poor shape after Harriman and I have been really sore from last weekend. So it was nice to see I could still do it. Perfect conditions.

Just lost one of my toenails that got wrecked at Harriman. The other one is still hanging in there.

Orienteering (Course Setting) 45:00 [2] 4.0 km (11:15 / km)

ROC - Letchworth East - Set out controls for the White and a part of the Yellow Course

Orienteering 56:00 [3] *** 6.5 km (8:37 / km)
spiked:7/9c

ROC Letchworth Red/Green. Ugghh. My first DNF ever. I came to the event with the mindset that I wasn't going to run, but since we were cutting off the registration strictly at 2:00, there was really only one person needed for finishing after that time and we had a couple people set-up. I figured I would be back well before the last stragglers. So, right after hearing about Jim Pamper going out on the Red course after being given a Green map (we were handing them out right as they started) I managed to head out on the Green course with a Red map. Fortunately the first control was the same for both and I realized the mistake at that control. I thought, Oh well, I will do the longer one with no clues - it will be a challenge! Well, I was not physically up to the challenge. After a steep climb into #7, my calves started cramping and I couldn't get them stretched out. I changed my gait to compensate and a different muscle would cramp. I managed to get #8 and #9, but after hitting the road on the way to #10, I decided to bag it and walk out on the road.

It was pretty disappointing because we don't get to this park too often (and this side) and I really like the scale of the park.

And to top it off, I didn't cover the flag pickup very well and one was still left after all the helpers were in. Fortunately it was somewhat accessible by road and I got it on my way out.

Biking 1:30:00 [3] 22.0 mi (4:05 / mi)

Really two rides - one at Mendon - because Kameron wanted to check out the course for the upcominng Duathalon - and then another ride (this one flat) on the towpath.

Walking 25:00 [2] 1.6 mi (15:37 / mi)

Brisk walk at lunch. The weather drew me out but I didn't have the best shoes and returned with a blister. My feet still have not had a chance to fully recover from Surebridge.

Trail Running 37:19 [3] 3.76 mi (9:55 / mi)

Powder Mills - Perfect afternoon for a run. Primarily on the main trails.Felt a little sluggish and feet were a bit sore after the run.

Mapping 1:05:00 [1] ** 2.11 mi (30:48 / mi)

Powder Mills - Worked the linear features on the east side. Tried my hand again at the vegetation and went back to focusing on linear/point features. I am sure I will regret my procrastination on updating the veg during the summer when I won't be able to see as far.
