Hockey (Pond) 30:00 [2]

Nice ice at the Hollow - the hard freeze last weekend and light snow made for good conditions. I probably wouldn't have logged except I spent the first 20 minutes shoveling - which was the real work. Probably out there 1.5 hours.

Running 27:27 [3] 3.34 mi (8:13 / mi)
shoes: PI Synchro Seek Trail

Turk Hill - Perinton Park Loop. Heel did not bother me too much. The sidewalks were tough - what was probably clear but wet this afternoon had a slick sheen this evening.

Note

Took Tyler to the rec center last night and slipped on one of the steps going into the pool. Somehow I managed to bruise my heel mildly. There is a dull pain when walking, but as far as a bruised heel goes it is not too bad.

shoes: PI Synchro Seek Trail

ROC - Score-O at Mendon Ponds. Although it was a Score-O, the route was fairly obvious and for the most part everyone took the same route. I didn't feel so hot this morning and was scheduled to volunteer - so when I got a chance to run right away I wasn't quite mentally prepared. That feeling was somewhat reinforced when I had troubles with #3 and #4. However, it turned out that they were slightly misplaced. Settled in after that. Only hiccups were having to stop and tie each shoe once and maybe 1/2 minute to move #13 to the right spot. It was nice to get out there and the sun made me forget about the cold.

Hockey 30:00 [2]

Fairport Village Rink - low intensity - just skating around with Tyler and passing the puck back and forth. He has been skating for 3 years, but this was his first time with a stick.

After bagging the Thursday trip to the gym, it was a bit easier to persuade myself today.

Needed to return a movie and wanted to get a run in - so the evening worked out nice. Cutting through 1/2 of the Fairport Public Schools and behind Wegmans made for nice run that was mostly on sidewalks or paved trails. It turned out that there were a few more hills than anticipated.

Note

Tried something new today - Kameron got me a one month membership to the fitness center at Total Sports Experience - which is right across the street from my office. So I dragged myself out of bed earlier than usual and got a workout in before work. The center is nicer/bigger than the Perinton Rec center and my membership lets me on the baketball court and the soccer fields (alhtough I haven't played soccer since HS phys ed). Anyway, it might work out nicely if I can manage to change my sleep habits a bit and get up an about an hour earlier.

Orienteering (Ski-O) 1:22:00 [3] *** 6.67 km (12:18 / km)
spiked:9/11c

ROC Ski-O at Harriet Hollister - headed down with the entire family. The plan was for me to ski, while Kameron and the kids found lunch. Then Kameron would snowshoe while I found someplace to sled with the kids. It worked out pretty nicely. However, I only finished 2 of 3 maps on the Blue course and DNFed officially. I felt pretty decent toward the end, but any more and I would have been overdoing it. I had only one minor hiccup in navigation, where I backtracked a bit to get to a better route and one blown route. I am not quite sure what the better route was, but at 7 Eric was just a bit behind me and Nate and then as I pulled up to 8 Eric had punched and was well on his way to 9.

One other minor problem I had was snow sticking to my skis. Jim gave me some good advice on wax - and hopefully I will heed it. But, I am not too much of a gear guy and will probably forget about it by the next time I am out. (which might be a while with the way the snow is going around here).

After skiing, I hoofed it back to the overlook clearing with the kids to sled and they had a pretty good time. Although the sledding fun is diminished when you have to worry about the ultra-steep incline and trees toward the bottom of the hill. Hopefully they will be on skis next year.

Running 56:00 [3] 6.6 mi (8:29 / mi)
shoes: PI Synchro Seek Trail

I missed the Freezeroo this morning (someone has to watch the kids!) but I managed to get a long run in this afternoon. The past 11 days have been nice - I got 4 outside runs in during daylight hours - which is much more than normal for me. Hopefully, I can build in more training time this winter as we transition into a more normal schedule.

Note

I downloaded my log from 2007 and checked out some of my totals. I had 529 controls (including Ski-Os), ran in 32 events/races, and logged 244 running miles. The mileage includes trail running but does not include O-races. I only started logging in the middle of 2006 - so I can't compare the entire year, but if I compare the appropriate date ranges I had an increase in running miles, and a decrease in controls for 2007. I would have thought the reverse to be true - but the numbers tell the tale. My USOF Score went from 72 in 2006 (5 events) to 79.9 in 2007 (6 events)

It would be nice to have a goals section added as a future enhancement to the site (time to make my yearly donation) but until then a note will have to do.

2008 Goals:
Running Miles: 300
Orienteering Events/Races: 35
Controls: 550
USOF Score: 85 (Red)

An increase in orienteering will be hard since the weekends are already packed and I might only be able to get to one or two more regional meets. I think the mid-week running is where I have the most opportunity to improve. We will have to see if this approach will help me improve my score.
