Orienteering 55:40 [5] *** 5.9 km (9:26 / km)
spiked:14/14c shoes: Mudclaw O+340

I made a comment the other day that Powder Mills is overused and I still think it is. But I really enjoyed being out there today. It helped that I felt really good and orienteered well. As is the reality at Powder Mills, the flag locations were not especially difficult, but the courses did a nice job of setting up several difficult route choices. The ones to #4 and #7 stick out in my mind as the ones I struggled with most. For #4 I avoided the swamp and swung way south along the roads and for #7 I took more direct line and crossed the main N-S swamp. It looks like I may have took both legs, but the route I chose for #4 probably allowed me to save a bit of energy (by not going over the main ridge) for the rest of the course.

The spikes listed indicate me executing my route choices and hitting the flag, but one could argue my route choice to number 4, does not deserve a spike

Elliptical 50:00 [3]

A little longer than planned since I didn't want to leave the ball game. Surprisingly the 50 minute mark came at the exact moment of the game winning hit.

Orienteering 1:07:56 [4] *** 6.3 km (10:47 / km)
spiked:13/17c shoes: Mudclaw O+340

Perfect day for orienteering and it happened to be in my favorite location. Really, only the third run I have had on the east side. It is nice.

Unfortunately, I don't think it was one of my better races. I started atrociously spiking only 4 of the first 8 controls. I had significant overruns at #4 (running along the towpath) and #6 (miscounting the reentrants coming off the slope requiring a relocation to the road) and had a 90 degree error at #2. The one at #2 stunk since it resulted in an unnecessary 5 contour climb. It did look like there was at least one other person that made the same mistake I did based on some of the disturbance on the slope.

After #8, I really thought about the map scale and my overruns and finally settled in - hitting #9 through #17 (GO) nicely. The last 4 were more of a physical challenge than a navigational one.

However, I figured out that the best way to improve my time is with a better warm-up rather than increased
