Event: GorgesGoat

Orienteering (Goat) 2:42:00 [5] *** 13.2 km (12:16 / km)
17c

Wow, that was fun. The course was well set and it was exciting to be running in new terrain. The course also had a forked control choice and allowed everyone to drop a control - so the format was fun as well. My race was OK, except for errors at two controls. Ultimately they were becuase of poor navigating, but a early choice in the race put me in a bad position. At the fork control I chose to go to C7 rather than C6. I was happy with that choice but I got off course on the way to the control and totally missed the large feature (just a 20m tall hill) that C7 was tucked into. Lost 6-8 min. The poor choice came almost immediately after when I chose to skip C8. Although from an energy use standpoint this was a good choice since it would have been a dogleg - there and back route - but it was a fairly easy control to find. And skipping C8 forced me to go to C12 later in my run, which was a tough find. I went to where I thought C12 should be but was not confident I was on the right ridge. I wound up working my way up the ridge to the old canal where I had to reposition myself using the water features. It turned out that I was just a bit too far up the rigde and should have gone down a bit. This one was bad - I lost 12-15 minutes.Felt a bit better when Wil and Tim indicated they chose to skip C8 as well. Finished third (officially) but Gil was way ahead of me and DNFed due to a mangled map late in the race. Once again, forgot to take splits.

Orienteering 43:56 [4] *** 5.7 km (7:42 / km)

Mendon Ponds - Semi-Permanent - Green - ran this one in the opposite direction to the event in July. I decided to post splits anyway. The previous run definitely helped with the exception of C7. I went half way down 3 spurs before finding the right one. I agree with Mike on the missing controls (4, 8, 9) and I think the infamous C13 was missing.

Orienteering (Flag P/U) 15:00 [3] **

In this case, it was flag PUT up. I couldn't stand it any more and since I had a bit of time and some orange tape in my car I placed new flagging at C8, C9 and C13 on the 5.7km green course. In retrospect I should have placed a flag for C4 as well. For those who follow, please let me know if I placed them correctly.

Walking 30:00 [2] 2.3 mi (13:03 / mi)

RTP - normal loop at lunch

Running 39:32 [3] 5.0 mi (7:54 / mi)
weight:181lbs

I am feeling like a slacker when reading the logs of the locals! Which is one of the points of hanging around this board. So, I was motivated this evening and managed a 5.0 mile run. I am getting a better handle on tracking my pace - ran 7.3 min/mi, 7.5, 7.6, 7.5, 8.0 for the five miles. Definitely dropped off for the last one. I am looking forward to this weekend to try to turn around my recent luck at Letchworth. At the last two meets I managed to lock my keys in the car and take a tumble that eventually sent me to the ER for an x-ray (negative) on my ribs. Still, I felt like I ran well at both events.
