BFLO - Camp Schoellkopf - Red

I wasn't sure when I arrived if this was a Scout only event as the place was busy w/Scouts. But it was open to all. Just like the last time I was at the camp, a course transfer from the master map to your map was required. I don't have any issues with this, but I wouldn't mind having to do this on the clock to make it interesting.

The camp has some great terrain, but it is split down the middle by a generally uncrossable creek - so the course setting has some restrictions. Anyway, the first half was on the less busy, east side with more open woods. I used the compass effectively on two legs (3-4 and 4-5) that didn't have the close-up attackpoints. The second half was on the west side which has quite a few building and roads. We still had a tough leg from 9-10, which called for a straight line run through the woods and more precise navigation. I hit it pretty well, but for some reason missed the flag on my first approach. I went up the reentrant, then down - passing the bag twice before noticing it was hanging between two trees. Stayed off trail to #11 and the rest was just managing the roads and hills.

Perfect day for an event and I was glad I made the trip. The drive back on the backroads was quite nice with all of the colors.

Unofficial run. Was a bit tired and not too focused. Missed one pretty badly.

Trail Running 51:42 [3] 5.61 mi (9:13 / mi)

Kameron raced in the Black Diamond Duathlon this morning and the run portion was in Fishers Park. I had no idea this park existed (it may not have a few years ago). Anyway, I was intrigued enough to go back for some trail running this afternoon. It is a nice park, with a fabulous section of woods. But it is too small for any significant orienteering. The trail loop is about 2 to 2.5 miles and I had to run on the Lehigh Valley rail trail to get any distance. The rail trail is about 200m south of the park.

The park would actually be nice for some sprints and maybe up to a yellow course - but not much more. It has some fantastic beech woods, a low area along Iron. Creek and some open rolling fields. It might be bigger than Badgerow, but if so, not my much.

Got to run in the daylight this evening - so I checked out the trolley trail east of Perinton Park. There really isn't much to it - having been obliterated by development, but there is a good straightaway that gets you from Perinton Park to Eyer Park in ER w/o too much road work and then there is a decent sized wooded area behind BOCES that has some trails. I knew they were back there, but never tried them. It was a nice little find for me.
