Note

Well, day 2 of GNC 2021 was a total bust. I got to the park at 7:35 only to be stopped at the gate and told the park was closed. There was an ongoing search and rescue mission for a suicidal person whio may be dangerous. Sam waited at the gate to inform other O'ers. I headed over to the Walmart parking lot to hang out with who ever showed up. We were hoping the guy would be found and the park opened and we could continue with the meet. By 11am, park was still closed and no indication of if or when it may re-open. So we canceled the Sunday meet. Very disappointing.
I came home and fell asleep. Standing around in the cold all day Saturday and 3.5 hours Sunday morning really wears me out. I guess shivering burns lots of energy.

Note

First day of GNC 2021, Sweetwater-West map. All went well! We had a good turn-out, 127 runners. Everyone finish unassisted and only had to wait on one straggler.
It was overcast all day and never really warmed up. Probably not too bad running but was cold standing around. Finish times were all over the map, as expected. That is every course seemed to have one or two runners who ran great and turned in a fast time - under the recommended minimum in some cases. Hard to know who would show up so I keep the courses a little on the short side and so when some high powered orienteerers came it showed. Fortunately people seldom complain about having a really good, fast run! So, there were no complaints and a number of compliments.

Orienteering (hanging controls) 45:00 [1] 2.0 mi (22:30 / mi)

Hung four controls on the Yellow course for the meet tomorrow. Looks like the meet tomorrow will be a busy day, or at least a long day. Over 130 starts, over 4 hour window. Pretty big event for a little ol' club meet.

Ran the Brown-X course at the upcoming Sweetwater meet. Did pretty well, not a surprise since I hung all the controls. A little off course going from 3 - 4, never been to that control from that direction before and I wasn't paying enough attention to the map and compass. Plus I was a little tired from hanging controls for 3 hours yesterday and again today so it was hard to concentrate. Given that, I was surprised I was as fast as I was, 3.8 km straight line is still under 10 min/km.

Sweetwater Creek State Park. Hanging controls for the meet this weekend. Nice day for a walk in the woods. Hung 22 controls so far, about 20 more to do tomorrow. The last 2 or 3 I'll put out Saturday morning. Looks like we'll have about 130 runners! Pretty good turn out for a local meet. Only about 15-20 from out of state. Hope our teenagers do well, they definitely have the "home map" advantage.

A couple times it hailed on me for a minute or two even though the sun was shining brightly. Obviously there were some intermittent clouds in the sky. It sured seemed odd.
