Transgrancanaria 82k:
Reasonably pleased with how this went after running for only 2 of the previous 6 weeks due to Achilles injury. Enjoyed the first 45k mostly in the northern part of the island in the cooler part of the day and running over the tops. Felt strong on the climbs which were mostly runnable. Pulled away from Hector about 5/6k into race and stayed ahead until mid-way aid station at 40k. From highest point on race at 42k (1950m), we ran together for 2-3km along with Huub from Netherlands and established we were in 3-5th positions. From 45k, I let Hector and Huub race ahead down the
steeper rocky/cobbled paths - I took the descents slow as quads a bit out of condition and i was trying not to aggravate fascia under heel which was hurting intermittently. Portuguese guy (Helio) came past at Tunte aid station, around 52k, i past him again along with Huub and Spaniard Danni who was fading on the climb up to next col. Helio came past again when we hit the road in the next valley at around 63km and shot off along the flat section to eventually catch Hector and finish 2nd. Made a slight mistake at around 65km - 2nd last aid station (Ayagaures) - didn't stop long enough to rehydrate and cool down. Filled two half litre soft flasks but drank most over next kilometer or two leaving nothing for 7k of running through hot dry valley. At 77k, I was passed again by Huub and Danni as i tried to cool down at a small water station. The damage was done and there was nothing i could do to reel them in again. Ran the last 4k with an Italian doing the 125k race (after starting 8hrs before us) - he finished ahead at the end.
Pleased to finish without any abnormal pain/injury in legs although nasty blister on big two where tape had fallen off - hadn't felt it much on run but could barely walk after finishing. Note to self not to cram in long runs a week before an ultra (started race with blister). Achilles held out fine - no problems there. Intermittent pain in fascia under heel never got any worse and was ok at the end. Left knee very stiff at end - knee cap sore and unable to bend leg past 90 degrees for about 6hrs after.
Really enjoyed the experience. Great route, trails, weather, scenery and company.
