LDMT

Had a decent run out to CP1 - was slowly gaining on Scoffer until we entered the mist on the ridge before checkpoint. Then contoured a bit early and lost 30-60s dithering on boulder strewn ground before running into Helen and two guys i'd passed 5mins previously just before CP1. Proceeded to cock up the nav in spectacular style between CP1 & 2 through combination of errors, resulting in 120m extra climb and between 20-25mins lost. Map was a bit confusing and i miscounted contours, thinking i just needed to contour round and drop onto checkpoint when i was actually too low and heading 45 degrees in wrong direction. Was struggling to read map and follow bearing whilst traversing craggy terrain. Had lost the will to race hard and confidence in nav after until Jack W came past around CP2 (after starting 23mins later). Decided to keep him in sight for as long as poss whilst checking the nav - wasn't too difficult as i was gaining slightly on the steep climbs. Caught Helen again at Dunmail Raise. Managed to get ahead of Jack to CP8 as he contoured a bit low. Dithered on route choice after CP9 letting Jack get ahead again. We both opted for descending first, then contouring round to CP10 but perhaps dropped a bit low on path before cutting across. Lost jack whilst picking a line through the thick vegetation but caught him up on the climb to CP10. Jack was done in by this point so i went ahead but didn't feel like running hard to the finish - remnants of injury tightening up so didn't want to stride out. Reasonable satisfied with 5th in the end after big mistake. Need to practice nav whilst moving quickly over difficult terrain for next time.
