kayaking 1:13:00 [3]

Huon Winter Series - final race. This time around the bottom half of egg island which made a nice change. Race time 1:03:02 for 11.5 k

I'd been fretting about this race for a while but it all turned out ok. did a decent warm-up for a change, then got off to a good start. Managed to hang onto the back of the guy who dropped me halfway around last race - this time hung onto him until the end in one form or another. finished in a group of 4 but it's pretty hard to match the power of the guys in a sprint to the finish line! Thus I finished at the back of the group of four. Never the less I'm pretty happy with the race.
one more week of proper training before freycinet

Running 55:00 [3]

waterworks. this time up to huon highway (or whateveritis) junction at top of waterworks reserve. ankle felt ok again.

kayaking 1:10:00 [3]

Thursdy night paddle group. 2k warm up, then about 3k of 30sec on, 30sec off. then one big race back to prossers via blinking billy, then 'warm down' - i.e. fast pace 2k back to DSS.

kayaking 55:00 [3]

cruisy paddle to see tall ships. camera wouldn't work though so that was disappointing - although parked at he wharf they weren't amazingly spectacular.
nice morning though.

Monday Sep 23, 2013 #

Running 50:00 [3]

slugglish peter murrell. ankle a bit sore. no more running until thrusday .

Orienteering 43:00 [3]

pittwater. got around almost cleanly for the first time in my life. Not due to anything but sheer good luck and start time placement. Everytime I was unsure I either caught someone up just before the control, or someone was leaving the control, or I could see people way up ahead looking like they were punching a control. clearly this is the way to do pittwater - stuff the navigation - it just leads to errors. this run of good luck will never be repeated though - it was like getting all the green lights on the way through the city - perhaps I should retire from pittwater now.

It was a mental effort to drag myself back out to do a technique session on browns river this afternoon - but in the end I found that everyone at home was was annoying me so much that I was better off out in the rain. (and I think everyone was grateful when I left)

had a good session although sometimes I wonder if i'm practising the right technique, or the wrong ones - i don't know what the perfect stroke feels like.

kayaking 1:32:00 [3] 15.5 km (5:56 / km)

Paddle from kingston beach around tinderbox to dru point. had awkward diagonal trailing waves for the first part, they wanted me to surf onto the rocks so I had to keep zig-zagging down the coast, staying as off shore as I was comfortable with to avoid the rebound (waves on way in, meeting waves on way out = messy with a chance of swimming)

once I turned around tinderbox (8k) it was pretty calm and smooth sailing. the Garmin is a great training tool as I could see when I was slacking off as my speed and HR were dropping. tried to be consistent and above 'leisurely' pace.

cycling 1:00:00 [3]

couldn't face running or paddling today and my calf was still a little sore from the cramp yesterday (is that normal?). So decided to ride for the first time in a while. All went ok and i rode to mums after work to get a lift home.

Running 55:00 [3]

From lambert ave to signal station. all on bush tracks. 31 to top, 25 or so back via loop extenstion on way down.

kayaking 1:40:00 [3] 14.0 km (7:09 / km)

well that was a toughie. 2k warm up 4 x 2.5k efforts, two of them with an occy strap around the boat to slow it down! Also had to start each effort from the beach - so standing nextto the boat. On the last effort I got cramp in my calf and hopped in and immediatley fell straight out. took a few minutes before I could trust cramp wouldn't kick in again when I got back in. I felt ok tonight but seemed to be falling off the back of the pack a lot. hmmm

Running 1:10:00 [3]

I actually don't have any idea how long it was but it was good and long and i'm happy my ankles survived the rugged sydney sandstone tracks of lane cove NP. what a great day!

with Andy down to water and back..

Running 30:00 [3]

it was 1.0 degree when I started running. there were numerous icy puddles. went to first lookout on alum cliffs run

kayaking 45:00 [3]

had planned to do a session on Browns River after run but the Browns River Blast Chiller was turned on (there's a weird local freezing wind that comes straight down the river from the mountain) - so I decided to drive up to marieville - which is where I was going to park anyway - and paddle from there. It was a good decision - nice and sunny and calm (but still only 2.9 degrees).

Running 10:00 [3]

so amongst other things today I forgot my bike helmet (it's hard to remember bike stuff, work stuff, paddle stuff & running stuff - particularly when some of it needs to be collected at 6am). So had to run to work rather than ride. so that was another 10 mins. cans of coke quite agitated by time I arrived.

Note

Also: I had to get the ice off the car, and the ice out of the seat of my boat before I paddled. but you don't hear me complaining. PL

kayaking 1:15:00 [3] 11.0 km (6:49 / km)

tough thursday night paddle session tonight. 5 x 4 min efforts with 2 mins paddling in between all heading south. then just about at taroona high we turned and did 1 long effort back. first downwind swell of the season for me so that was fun. but tiring.

Running 51:00 [3]

waterworks loop. been going a little further up the pipeline track before I turn each time. today i went to 3rd bridge.

Tuesday Sep 10, 2013 #

kayaking 55:00 [3]

5 x 5min intervals with about 2 mins in between. garmin will tell the truth about session when I download the data. it was gusty and a little choppy so didn't get into a great rhythm.

Monday Sep 9, 2013 #

kayaking 1:13:00 [3] 10.0 km (7:18 / km)

cruisy paddle out of Kingston. grey day but quite calm. rained for last 10 minutes.

Sunday Sep 8, 2013 #

Orienteering 37:00 [3]

Peter Murrell reserve. pretty dodgy course if you ask me but was still nice to get out. legs got ripped to shreds by unmarked blackberries/gorse on the obvious route choices. feels like I have sunburn - can't wait to stick them in salt water tomorrow morning.

Saturday Sep 7, 2013 #

kayaking 55:00 [3]

Another good technical/interval session with chris at browns river. had to be on water at 7am and it was wet and windy but determination paid off and the weather turned into something a lot more bearable after about 10 minutes.

Running 47:00 [3]

Waterworks loop plus bit extra on upper pipeline.

kayaking 1:10:00 [3]

thursday night suffering session.
10k time trial - who wouldn't love that..
4 laps 59:19, 10.2k
14:41
14:55
14:47
14:55

paddled my hardest - thought the last lap would be the fastest. turns out not! felt I got dropped a bit by the other div 2 paddlers. oh well.

oh - wore jon's new garmin - so HR was 159 for first lap then sitting at 163/164 for next three. no idea what that means.

crack=-o-dawn technique session. nice morning but freeeeezing on browns river.

Monday Sep 2, 2013 #

Running 47:00 [3]

kayaking 1:36:00 [3]

Lap of the island from Huonville to franklin, through the channel and back. happy to avoid wind which is blowing everywhere else although I did have a hairy time trying to put boat back on car!
