Beautiful weather but I didin't feel like paddling in the derwent today so I drove the 30 mins to franklin like I did last weekend. This time I went south though - so through the canal, down towards Port Huon then back up to franklin. it's a bit longer than the other way but a nice change. I battled the incoming tide and a headwind on the way down but it made for a quick trip north once i finally got around the bottom of the island. 43mins down, just over 30 mins or so on the way back. tried to make it a nice steady training paddle.
Got a text message today describing the upcoming session as 'hard' which after the last two sessions of suffering meant I spent the rest of the day fretting about it.
turned out it wasn't so bad. 11 x 1 minute on, 1 minute off, then 5 minutes paddling into the middle of the river, then a 20 minute 'time trial/race' back to the beach. it wasn't easy but it was easier than the other ones.
seventy minutes of this was a nice loop on mirror calm water from Franklin around the northern part of Egg Island. I think that paddle marks the official start of Summer Survival Training which is on in 4 weeks.
the other 10 - 20 minutes was paddling with the kids at kingston beach in the afternoon. Jett paddled with me down browns river. I found that if I put my paddle down and paddled with my hands, we were going at the same pace! Jett's boat doesn't have a rudder so he spends a bit of time spinning around a bit. all good fun thouhg. water is really warm at the moment but the jelly fish a bit further out to sea are as big as basket balls.
