Orienteering race 56:08 [4] *** 4.4 mi (12:45 / mi) +55m 12:17 / mi
ahr:161 max:186 22c shoes: Inov-8 X-Talon 212

had a bit of trouble calibrating to map scale at beginning so first few controls were not the fastest. started feeling better and able to focus pretty well on keeping moving while looking at the map. ended up leapfrogging with a guy from around control 14 to the end. he was definitely a faster runner but i had a bit of advantage on navigation (!). he ended up finishing ahead of me but when we compared times, found out he had started before me so i was overall faster. having him to compete against for the last part of the map helped keep me focused on navigating and moving so it was pretty cool and fun!

beautiful day out overall and felt good about seeing tangible improvement to my orienteering! :D

Hiking 3:21:26 [3] 5.2 mi (38:44 / mi) +490m 29:58 / mi

started at exit 38 far side climbing area and headed up past the climbing crags (been so long since i’ve been out at this area!). realized the rock i always thought was called “grits cone” is actually called “grit scone”! e pointed out that it did look kind of like a gritty scone.

the plan had been to do an ascent of putrid pete’s peak (P3) but we got a later start than planned, so we adjusted our sights on dirty harry’s balcony and getting to snow line. worked our way up and got views out over I-90 and the mist-shrouded valleys. fairly continual rain throughout the hike but being under trees provided quite a bit of shelter. rain gear also tested and held up well - yahoo!

made it both to dirty harry’s balcony (not the best day for views) and then started on the connector trail over to the trail up to P3 and barely reached snow line before turning back to make it down with the remaining daylight.

apparently the day after 'dangerously high winds', discovery park provides some useful training for orienteering - lots of blown-down branches and trees to clamber over or pick one's way through. actually kind of fun!

oh and i saw a bald eagle :)
