I had too much race-based adrenaline for sleeping last night.

Tonight I had my telephone interview with VANOC2010. If short track speed skating is interested in my file, I may have an interview in Vancouver as early as July and I should be preparing for the ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup, October 24-26, at the Pacific Coliseum.

Considering potential for sprint races, I had been looking forward to seeing this brand new map. However, with sitting water and so much green, I was unable to get up to sprint speed.

Aside from that, I had a terrible race strategically. Even so, I managed to grab ninth place (of ten) in the series and got two awards. [After Margus was factored in as the winner for the finalé, I actually won tenth place overall.]

In the race, I started west with a train on its way to nowhere. The train stumbled and broke up long after what should have been our first control, #13. From #12, I went 70m beyond #6 and had to back track. En route to #5, I messed 'round on wrong cliff. From #5 I headed for #7 but couldn't find it so went to #4 and then back for #7. From #8 I headed for #11 in the green hoping to use extended remnants of stone wall. My bearing was close but not close enough as I ended up right on #14 - 300m beyond #11 - so back on trail to #10 and then head for #11 again (no problem this time).

I stuttered much too much looking for #2, then heard a scream which turned out only to be John catching sight of me. He passed me en route to #1 as I stumbled through knee high swamp and he ran farther but higher and drier. From #1 I took Robertson Road and then through the radio tower property, jumped fence and followed Cathy 'til I realised how far off she was and backtracked to #9. From #9 I fought N through green on to trails straight to #13, NE to trail and trail-skirted green but left trails early and went directly to #15 and probably got a black eye from whipping branches on the way there.

Because of my poor performance, I didn't get to see half of the map. However, I do know that trails #21 and #20 on the east side of Hanel are waterlogged.

Until New Brunswick, that's it for orienteering.

It seemed a lot hotter than the thermometer stated.

Richard left Mount Royal before I was done.

I went to the wrong building for the start and had more of a walk than I planned. The mountain-side stairs (going down) were much tougher on my knee than I expected.

It was good to race through the cemetery even though there was a service in progress at control #13. I inadvertently did a 360 around the giant antenna between #5 and #6, losing more than six minutes.

Nurse from London Life came for blood, urine, blood pressure etc. She had trouble drawing my blood and I nearly fainted - how predictable.

I'm heading to Calgary on short notice to assist the moving and I will miss the next score-O (and likely lose my place in the final standings). Hopefully, Team Agar will finally put in some O-training while I'm in Alberta.

In the early afternoon humidex hit 37 but thundershowers before the meet brought the temperature way down, thankfully. Five controls were in the school yard where we started. After queuing up at five early controls last week, I waited to see which schoolyard control was targeted by nobody and that's where I went. My strategy was in flux. If I had hit #9 before #8, I may have gone on to #10, #12, and #14 but couldn't quite figure what to do with #8 and #13 or #11. When I came out of #10 and hit the trail to #11 dead on, my decision was made for me, run LONG and forget about 12, 13 and 14 - good job.

I stalled on rock piles at #15 and then wasted too much time seeking #17, then run, run, run but don't fall down the old wells. From #19, Rorry led a train towards #20. Hoping to finally visit that feature (intersection of ditches), I felt no guilt following. However, we drifted left and hit the trail which leads on to Bell High School and two controls - LONG run. Someday, I will visit that feature.

Then out toward the street-O, I resisted the enormous temptation to dart through the resident's car park and went N four properties to real entrance. If I had hit #23 with time to spare, I would have tried for #13 but there was no time left. I doubt that my time lost at #15 and #17 was enough to add a control in the back half.

I do like this challenging map. Unfortunately, there are no facilities not even a portapotty for changing. The two hour bus journey in wet underwear may have consequences.

In the score-O series, I've moved up from 14th to 10th. Just like the ol' days of the Mad Trapper series, John R is right behind me. However, I have one extra age-handicap to play with. Last year we both ran well on the Cedarview West map, tomorrow's venue.

It was nasty waiting in line ups at the first five controls. Some of the controls were not punches but pencil-writing assignments. At my first writing control (6), I wrote in the wrong box. Then when I got to #19, I scribbled something about a plaque and never looked for the billboard thus getting no point for that control (580m error). Heading for #8, I blazed right by trail and had to retreat (300m error). That error blew my confidence and I got twisted heading for #18 (another 300m error). It's sure easy to calculate errors in a street-O.

Best case scenario, I should have got #19 and could have got #15 and #13.

Navigating street-Os was once my strength. With the 50 minute limit, I never got out of the streets of Rockcliffe Park. Hey, things could have been worse. On my way to catch the bus home, I met James heading back from the GGs, WAY off the south end of the map.

Having DNFed on the adjoining map two weeks ago, I was too anxious to sleep well. I blew legs 2, 3 and 10, losing more than 30 minutes. I was frustrated about being passed on the pasture runs but later reviewing my ground speed, I don't think I can expect any better speed on the knee. I suspect that had I not added time to my outing in legs 2 and 3, I would have been fresh enough to nail leg 10.

This was my 106th orienteering race.
