This was my first night-O in years and I should have had much more focus on a score-O route strategy. Unlike in daylight running, I was unable to watch my footing at speed and strategize a map circuit en route. In daylight, I could have cleared this map in the 1 hour time limit.
Between 2 and 3, I should have grabbed 12 and 15. I attempted to find 22 but like others, I had to eventually cut my losses and head for 20. Between 16 and 22, I should have grabbed 8. Heading back from 25, I didn't even realise that I was still missing 8, 12 and 15 which I could have gathered before time ran out on the way to the finish.
I blew right by 25 and had to retrace, then came down all the way to the lake and used the flooded lakeside trail when I could have gained plenty of time using the road-quality trail passed the lighted maintenance buildings. I had plenty of time and energy to do 23 controls but I didn't have the smarts.
For orienteering, my Petzl lamp is just adequate not great. In a score-O format, however, it doesn't need to be great because there are so many other lamps bobbing through the woods.
Without some new-found confidence that should come with more night experience, I may not have attempted 21 and 23. However, I also hadn't noticed 'til after the event that the map was 1:5000 and the distances were only half what I thought I was working with against the ticking clock.

At a faster pace than racing, I picked up novice controls on a lovely late evening trail run.
